Functions as a member of the surgical team under the direction of the registered nurse. Performs scrub functions and other roles that support the perioperative plan of care. Assures the provision of comfort, safety, and quality perioperative care for the patient. Demonstrates knowledge of operative procedures. Responsible for draping, instrumentation, suture, and equipment. Capable of setting up and maintaining organization of the mayo and back table throughout procedures. Accurate counting and accounting for all required items before, during, and after procedures. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon. Accountable for checking instrumentation, equipment, and supplies prior to use in procedures. Knowledgeable about the specific uses of all equipment and supplies used for surgical procedures. Seeks out information and support for areas of knowledge deficit prior to use. Plans, prepares, and functions in emergency situations. Ensures the room is ready before the scheduled case. Minimizes turnover by assisting and preparing for the next case by obtaining instruments and supplies. Stays in the operating room where the patient is brought in. Demonstrates knowledge and skills of aseptic technique. Utilizes principles of aseptic technique, including gowning, gloving, sterilization, and disinfection. Follows standards regarding attire. Assesses safety and safe mechanical condition of equipment and reports any malfunction. Demonstrates competency in handling, identifying, and labeling medications on the sterile field. Properly disposes of sharps, including needles, blades, and staples. Assists in the proper cleaning, moving, and storage of equipment. Demonstrates knowledge of sterilization and disinfection techniques. Correctly performs high-level disinfecting of equipment. Ensures cleanliness of instrumentation before disinfection or sterilization. Acts responsibly in support of surgical conscience. Actively participates in the unit department. Assists with vaginal deliveries as directed by the registered nurse. Helps with the positioning and transport of patients as directed by the registered nurse. Stocks rooms, carts, and warmers. Performs point of care testing as assigned. Covers the front desk as needed. Demonstrates behaviors of teamwork, including positive attitude and willingness to carry out assignments. Collaborates and cooperates with team members. Attends staff meetings and participates in the orientation of new staff or students. Demonstrates initiative in improving department services. Keeps abreast of current advancements in the operating room. Supports patient safety goals and department safety initiatives.
