Inpatient Staff Pharmacist

We are seeking an experienced Inpatient Staff Pharmacist to provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient pharmacy services in a hospital setting. The Staff Pharmacist will be responsible for medication order verification, clinical review, medication preparation and distribution, sterile and non-sterile compounding, controlled substances, patient education, and collaboration with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.

The pharmacist will also support pharmacy operations, quality assurance initiatives, regulatory compliance, and the training and supervision of pharmacy staff and students.

Position Details

• Employment Type: Temporary

• Pay Rate: Pay up to $ 76.77/hour

• Primary Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM

• Additional Coverage: Various shifts may be required, including overnight coverage from 11:30 PM–8:00 AM

Key Responsibilities

• Review, interpret, and verify physician medication orders for accuracy, appropriateness, dosage, interactions, and potential discrepancies.

• Prepare, label, verify, and distribute medications for inpatient, outpatient, and ancillary areas.

• Maintain accurate patient medication profiles and monitor medication selection, dosage, strength, dosage form, duration of therapy, and interaction potential.

• Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare providers to identify medication-related issues and recommend appropriate drug therapy alternatives.

• Develop patient-specific dosing regimens and protocols based on patient demographics, laboratory results, disease states, pharmacokinetics, and other clinical factors.

• Coordinate the preparation and distribution of sterile products, including:

• IV admixtures

• Total parenteral nutrition (TPN)

• Chemotherapy

• Other sterile compounded medications

• Ensure sterile compounding activities comply with USP <797> and USP <800> requirements.

• Coordinate non-sterile compounding in accordance with USP <795> , pharmacy policies, and patient care requirements.

• Prepare and compound special dosage forms when commercially available products are not appropriate or available.

• Manage the distribution, control, documentation, and recordkeeping of controlled substances in accordance with applicable laws and hospital policies.

• Oversee, train, educate, and evaluate pharmacy technicians, support personnel, and students.

• Assume Charge Pharmacist responsibilities as needed, including coordinating evening and weekend operations, assigning work, delegating responsibilities, and addressing operational issues.

• Perform medication storage and floor inspections and ensure outdated, excess, or improperly stored medications are removed and documented.

• Serve as a pharmacy liaison to nursing units and assist with routine medication-related issues.

• Maintain inventory and appropriately manage investigational drugs in accordance with federal, state, hospital, and departmental requirements.

• Provide medication education and in-service training to physicians, nurses, pharmacists, students, and other healthcare professionals.

• Provide patient medication counseling and education as needed.

• Participate in medication-use evaluations (MUE), quality assurance (QA), medication safety, and other continuous quality improvement initiatives.

• Maintain knowledge of pharmacy policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, and applicable state and federal laws.

• Participate in staff meetings, in-service programs, continuing education, conferences, and professional development activities.

• Demonstrate excellent customer service and maintain a patient-centered approach in all interactions.

• Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and respect for patient rights.

• Perform other pharmacy-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from an accredited pharmacy program.

• Current New Jersey Pharmacist license in good standing.

• Hospital/inpatient pharmacy experience strongly preferred.

• Experience with sterile and non-sterile compounding preferred.

• Knowledge of USP <795> , <797> , and <800> requirements.

• Experience with medication order verification, clinical pharmacy services, controlled substances, and medication distribution.

• Strong clinical judgment and attention to detail.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to work independently and effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

• Ability to provide leadership and direction to pharmacy technicians, support staff, and students.

• Ability to work various shifts, including evening, weekend, and overnight coverage (11:30 PM–8:00 AM) as needed.
