Summary

The Medical Laser Safety Officer (MLSO) will be assigned to set up and operate the laser equipment, and monitor the laser treatment controlled area for safety during the laser procedure. Under the direction of the physician/surgeon, the MLSO will control the operating panel of the laser and monitor the Operating Room for compliance with safety policies and procedures. The MLSO will attend laser safety training courses and be familiar with laser wavelength specific safety hazards and non-beam hazards. The MLSO will be committed to implement laser safety standards and policies and support laser surgery at LVHN and the offices of LVPG.

Job Duties

• Coordinates with outside vendors relative to new laser and/or rental laser equipment.
• Develops laser safety and physics courses on an annual basis or as needed.
• Ensures that all physicians and clinical staff members adhere to all laser safety requirements.
• Ensures that proper patient charges for laser services provided are processed.
• Ensures that the necessary records required by applicable government regulations are maintained.
• Evaluates all laser safety features and control measures for each Class IIIb and IV healthcare laser systems.
• Maintains a financial revenue and budget spreadsheet and assists in the development of a budget for laser services.
• Provides continuing education for staff who perform in laser procedure rooms.
• Reviews potential laser systems prior to purchase and acquisition.
• Assists in the development and implementation of departmental standard operation policies and procedures.
• Maintains a laser safety program including laser service policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in biological and/or natural sciences, i.e. math, chemistry, biology, physics, pre-med, nursing, or related field.
• Knowledge of surgical procedures for all surgical specialties, general anatomy/physiology, and medical terminology.
• Knowledge and application of surgical/aseptic skills and techniques.
• CMLSO - Certified Medical Laser Safety Officer - State of Pennsylvania within 1-1/2 Yrs

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of delivery systems and ancillary laser devices including understanding federal, state, and local regulation, ANSI standards Z136.1, and Z136.3.

Physical Demands

Lift and carry 25 lbs. frequent sitting/standing, frequent keyboard use, *patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
