Join Trees Matter in Milling Mesquite Pods into Flour!
Join Trees Matter and Sonoran Scavengers for a unique volunteer opportunity focused on local food systems, sustainability, and community education!
Volunteers will help support a community mesquite milling event where harvested mesquite pods will be cleaned, examined, and milled into flour. Volunteers will receive training at the beginning of each event and will assist with various parts of the milling process alongside Trees Matter staff and Sonoran Scavengers.
Volunteer Roles Include:
- Event check-in and participant support
- Weighing and labeling mesquite pods
- Examining and cleaning pods for debris or mold
- Assisting with moving buckets between stations
- Helping package milled mesquite flour at check-out
- No prior experience is necessary. Volunteers will be trained on the process and safety procedures during check-in.

What to Expect
These events will involve light to moderate physical activity, including standing, walking, lifting buckets, and working both indoors and outdoors. Some volunteer stations may involve dust from mesquite pods and flour.
Trees Matter will provide water, gloves, and basic safety equipment as needed. Volunteers are encouraged to wear:
- Closed-toe shoes
- Comfortable outdoor/work clothing
- Sun protection
- Reusable water bottle
Volunteers are encouraged to bring harvested mesquite pods to be milled during the event!
