SUMMARY:Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Supervisor, the Counselor II Intern gains educational and professional experience while supporting the daily operations of the Health & Wellness department. The intern assists in providing behavioral health and substance use counseling services to clients, ensuring all activities comply with established policies, procedures, and legal standards. This role is designed to provide hands-on learning opportunities for individuals pursuing a career in mental health counseling as part of their internship requirements.ESSENTIAL DUTIES:Meets with clients for behavioral and substance use assessments while under supervision of the clinical supervisor.Evaluates client information and determines level of care, intervention strategies, and individualized treatment and recovery plan while consulting with the clinical supervisor.Facilitates individual and group counseling sessions using evidence-based therapeutic intervention strategies.Prepares case presentations to discuss all clinical decisions with the clinical supervisor.Identifies recovery interference situations.Develops crisis intervention and relapse prevention plans.Ensures continuity of care by assisting clients with discharge planning.Refers clients to other agencies and services as needed.Collaborates with community agencies and resources to obtain and provide continuous care for clients.Monitors client progress; adapts treatment plans as needed.Prepares client progress reports and completion notices and provides them to the justice system, as required.Documents activities; maintains complete and accurate client files and records.Communicates with clients and family members within HIPAA standards.Participates in mandatory supervision meetings.Maintains a written log of required educational experiences, including client hours, activities, and supervision meetings.Participates in community outreach and educational opportunities.Maintains and develops professional knowledge through participation in on-site supervision, seminars, educational workshops, classes, trainings, and conferences.Complies with all property and department policies and procedures.Maintains a professional, organizational, and community reputation.Maintains strict confidentiality of all information processed through the department including records, reports, documents, conversations, etc.Performs other duties as assigned.The duties of this position are not limited to those set forth above. The incumbent will perform such functions, duties and assignments as directed by supervisor and consistent with ability, background and expertise.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Practicum or internship student in a master's program for Clinical Counseling.Valid driver's license is required when operating a vehicle for work-related purposes.Must successfully complete pre-employment requirements including a background check and drug/alcohol screening.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:Knowledge of:Goals, objectives, functions, policies, and procedures of Lea County.Applicable federal, state, county, and local laws, regulations, requirements, principles, and practices of clinical counseling.Department organization, functions, objectives, policies and procedures.Behavioral Health, alcohol and substance use theories and treatment.Therapeutic programs, services, and treatments.Crisis intervention techniques.Local population and community programs and resources.Case and records management practices.Modern office functions, procedures, and equipment.Skill in:Operating various word-processing, spreadsheets, database software programs, and industry-related applications in a Windows environment.Reading, reviewing, preparing, and analyzing operational reports, contracts, minutes, resolutions, ordinances, and other business-related documents.Analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.Exceptional customer service.Ability to:Perform essential duties and adapt to working conditions.Maintain strict confidentiality.Communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing, individually and in meetings.Establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds including the public and co-workers at all levels of the organization.Provide clear verbal and written instructions.Adapt to varying conditions, analyze situations, and adopt appropriate courses of action.Demonstrate professionalism at all times and demonstrate sensitivity in tenuous situations.Handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.Work dependently with a clinical supervisor, as well as cooperatively in group/team settings.PHYSICAL & EMOTIONAL DEMANDS:While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use a computer and cellphone/telephone ; and talk or hear. The employee occasionally is required to stand; walk; reach with hands or arms; and lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Tight time constraints and multiple demands are common. Travel is required for training, meetings, conferences, presentations, and other events.
