POSITION SUMMARY

The custodian's primary responsibility shall be to maintain a safe, clean and healthy physical environment at a District assigned facility by providing custodial, janitorial and maintenance services so that full educational use of school facilities are available to students, staff, parents and the school community.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Meets regularly with the head custodian to coordinate janitorial and custodial needs
• Follows and implements safe work practices and wears appropriate protective equipment, which includes District provided uniform
• Performs general cleaning and maintenance of the school building including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting and sanitizing according to established district practices.
• Assists with the removal of snow from driveways, parking lots, bus areas, sidewalks and entrances to the school with District provided shovels and machines
• Maintains the safety and security of the building and grounds and performs the final security check of the facility at the completion of the shift
• Assumes responsibility for the general fire safety of the school
• Sanitizes washroom fixtures, including toilets, urinals, washbowls, fixtures, walls, partitions and floors according to established district criteria
• Removes refuse from the building and places in outside refuse container
• Moves and sets up chairs, tables, staging , etc. as required for school events
• Maintains the grounds surrounding the school as required
• Performs other related duties as may be necessary and assigned by the head custodian, building principal and Director of Maintenance and Operations.
• Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved
• Demonstrates the ability to communicate, understand and follow directions both written and orally in English
• Some heavy lifting and physical labor is required. Required to lift and/or move a minimum of 50 pounds regularly and is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to and over 90 pounds with help.
• Satisfactory history of safe, efficient and effective use of custodial products and equipment. Required to properly handle chemical cleaners and supplies following school training and manufacturer's directions.
• Must be able to meet district cleaning, maintenance and safety standards with familiarity in Green cleaning practices. Floor stripping with a Square-Scrub type of machine is a plus.
• Demonstrates the ability to maintain effective and professional working relationships with students, staff, supervisors and members of the community.
• May be asked to work during school holidays, weekends, days, evenings and overtime during inclement weather as directed by Operations & Maintenance Manager.
• Demonstrates collaboration in a team atmosphere.

QUALIFICATIONS

• High School diploma or equivalent

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The role requires the ability to perform various physical tasks, including standing, walking, sitting, kneeling, lifting, and bending, as necessary to fulfill job responsibilities. The work environment may involve exposure to typical levels of noise and activity associated with a school and on a school bus setting. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Hourly rate, length of work year and ongoing service shall be aligned with the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Board of Education and the ASP.
