Job Description Summary Part Time Casual, As Needed (PRN) Responsibilities 40% - Prepares for surgical cases: obtain and prep supplies, review surgeon preferences, establish and maintain sterile field, present instruments, assist as 2nd assistant (dripping, operative site exposure), manage sharps removal and verification cards, hold extremities, assist with casting and splinting, mix medications on the sterile field (after RN verification), aid in positioning, fix specimens in formalin (annual competency), wash and thaw grafts, hold stapler while surgeon fires it, operate skin stapler for wound approximation, assist with joint dislocation (annual competency), cut suture material under supervision, apply ESU for hemostasis under direct supervision, assist anesthesia (annual competency), change out camera and robotic instruments (under supervision), manipulate uterus during robotic cases (under supervision). 40% - Equipment and Supply Maintenance: assist in post‑procedure cleaning of OR/equipment, return supplies to proper areas, restock room, run dart/biologics for sterilizers (annual competency), report damaged equipment, mop floor between cases, ensure cords are free of cuts, and perform other assigned duties. 20% - Unit Operations: contribute to department efficiency through effective communication, quality care, personal growth, training, and orientation of new personnel; maintain annual unit competencies, ACE and PAR requirements; mentor new associates; mix medications on the sterile field with RN verification; deliver medications to sterile field; run dart/biologics if qualified; sterilize instrumentation; assist with positioning; hold extremities; check next case cart; perform room turnover and set‑up for subsequent cases; assist with casting/splint application/removal; verify specimen labeling; wash or thaw grafts; help RN circulator under supervision; hold stapler while surgeon fires it; cut suture material under supervision; operate skin stapler for wound approximation; assist joint dislocation (annual competency). Cannot Perform: inject or administer medications, dye, or blood products; set up IVs; desiccate tissue; suture, tie suture, or use/activate cautery or ESU; perform invasive procedures; prep patient; access Pyxis for controlled substances; complete documentation for the legal medical record; manipulate or alter grafts; assist anesthesia with airway management or invasive lines; mark surgical site. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED (required). BLS – Basic Life Support, American Heart Association. Completion of OhioHealth OR ST Fellowship or graduation from an accredited (CAAHEP) surgical technologist school (preferred). Military training or 10+ years’ experience as a surgical technician is also acceptable. ST certification preferred. Demonstrated basic critical thinking skills and the ability to anticipate surgeon needs and communicate effectively with staff. Ability to identify potential emergency situations and intervene safely with assistance or supervision. Completion of basic skills and competencies in at least 2–3 service lines as per the Surgery Skill Competency Checklist. Independent scrubbing of complex cases in 1–2 assigned service line specialties. Specialized Knowledge Graduate from an accredited surgical technologist school (CAAHEP) or have equivalent military training or 10+ years’ experience. Understanding of procedures performed and anticipation of surgeon’s needs. Knowledge of OR environment, sterile field monitoring, and technical functions such as exposure, hemostasis, and instrumentation aid. BLS and strong clinical knowledge of the OR environment.
