Summary

The Tampa Veterans Healthcare System is currently recruiting for Dietitian positions within the organizations. Clinical Dietitians coordinate nutritional care of Veterans with other health care providers, the Veteran's caregiver, and the community. Employees in this assignment serve in a Dietitian (Clinical) position within the Clinical Section of Nutrition and Food Services(NFS).

Help

Dietitian (Clinical), GS-07: Employees in this assignment serve in a Dietitian (Clinical) entry level developmental position within the Clinical Section of NFS. They perform increasingly complex tasks as they acquire skills in clinical nutrition to apply evidenced-based nutrition practice guidelines. Clinical Dietitians coordinate nutritional care of Veterans with other health care providers, the Veteran, the Veteran's caregiver and the community. Clinical Dietitians learn to interpret research, apply whole health principles and develop patient centered goals. They collaborate with the Food Operations Section to enhance the Veterans' dining experience and ensure patient satisfaction.

Additional Duties include but not limited to:

  • Conducts nutrition assessments for patients with lower acuity using the Nutritional Care Process (NCP), including nutrition focused physical examinations, to establish a nutrition diagnosis and determine risk and/or degree of malnutrition.
  • Develops and implements Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) to address the nutrition diagnosis, evaluates and monitors the effectiveness and outcomes of MNT interventions. Modifies the plan as needed to achieve positive patient outcomes.
  • Documents MNT in the medical record using the Assessment, Diagnosis, Intervention, Monitoring, Evaluation (ADIME) format.
  • Calculates nutrient requirements and necessary diet restrictions or food and drug interactions.
Dietitian (Clinical), GS-09: Employees in this assignment serve in a Dietitian (Clinical) developmental position within the Clinical Section of NFS. They perform increasingly complex tasks as they continue to develop skills in clinical nutrition to apply evidenced-based nutrition practice guidelines. Clinical Dietitians coordinate nutritional care of Veterans with other health care providers, the Veteran, the Veteran's caregiver, and the community. Clinical Dietitians continue to learn to interpret research, apply whole health principles, and develop patient-centered goals. They collaborate with the Food Operations Section to enhance the Veterans' dining experience and ensure patient satisfaction.

Additional Duties include but not limited to:
  • Conducts comprehensive nutrition assessments using the Nutritional Care Process (NCP), including nutrition focused physical examinations, to establish a nutrition diagnosis and determine risk and/or degree of malnutrition.
  • Develops and implements Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) to address the nutrition diagnosis, evaluates and monitors the effectiveness and outcomes of MNT interventions. Modifies the plan as needed to achieve positive patient outcomes.
  • Documents MNT in the medical record using the Assessment, Diagnosis, Intervention, Monitoring, Evaluation (ADIME) format.
  • Calculates nutrition requirements and necessary diet restrictions or food and drug interactions, tailoring the diet prescription to each individual patient.
Dietitian (Clinical), GS-11: Employees in this assignment serve in a Dietitian (Clinical) full performance level position within the Clinical Section of NFS serving as the medical nutrition expert. They are autonomous in their work in applying evidenced-based nutrition practice guidelines for all patients, including those with complex medical and nutritional needs. Clinical Dietitians coordinate nutritional care of Veterans with other health care providers, the Veteran, the Veteran's caregiver, and the community. They interpret research and utilize whole health principles to develop patient-centered goals and improve outcomes. Clinical Dietitians collaborate with the Food Operations Section to enhance the Veterans' dining experience and ensure patient satisfaction.

Additional Duties include but not limited to:
  • Conducts comprehensive nutrition assessments using the Nutritional Care Process (NCP), including nutrition focused physical examinations, to establish a nutrition diagnosis and determine risk and/or degree of malnutrition.

  • Functions independently and accurately when record keeping.
Work Schedule : Monday through Friday. 7:30 am to 4:00pm

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements :
  • United States Citizenship : Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Registration. (1) All applicants must hold the RDN credential from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), the credentialing agency of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Note: Applicants who hold the RDN credential have met the education requirement (e.g. bachelor's degree or higher) of CDR, as such this occupation is considered professional and scientific with a positive education requirement and the procedures in Part I, Chapter 4 of this Handbook will be followed when applying Veteran's preference.
  • Exception for Dietitians who do not possess the RDN credential. (a) Non-credentialed Dietitians who meet the basic qualificationrequirements and have fulfilled the requirements below, but do notpossess the RDN credential, may be given a temporary full-timeappointment not to exceed one year under the authority of 38 U.S.C.§ 7405(c)(2).
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

GRADE DETERMINATIONS. All individuals assigned to this occupation must meet all the basic qualification requirements and all the requirements defined in the specific assignment.
  • Dietitian (Clinical), GS-07.
Experience or Education. None beyond the basic requirements.
  • Dietitian (Clinical), GS-09.
Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.

OR

Education. Master's degree from a regionally accredited university or college.

  7. Ability to collaborate with stakeholders.
  • Dietitian (Clinical), GS-11.
Experience. At least one year of experience as an RDN equivalent to the next lower grade.

Preferred Experience: Demonstrates expertise in developing personalized nutrition care plans by conducting thorough and comprehensive nutritional assessments. This includes analyzing patients' medical histories, dietary intake, lab results, and nutrition-focused physical examinations to craft tailored nutrition interventions that meet the unique needs and conditions of each patient. Familiarity with electronic health records and nutrition-related software (CPRS), ensuring precise and efficient documentation of nutrition care processes and communication within healthcare teams. Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare professionals. Adept at providing clear and compassionate nutrition education and counseling tailored to the individual needs of patients. In- depth understanding of contemporary dietary guidelines, as well as best practices based on the latest evidence in the field of nutrition.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-11. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-7; GS-9 to GS-11.

Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND®) is the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' accrediting agency for education programs preparing students for careers as registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDN).ACEND accredited programs are located on the ACEND website or at ACEND Accredited Programs Directory.

To be creditable, college and/or university degrees earned outside the U.S and its territories must be evaluated by ACEND® and meet ACEND®'s International Dietitian Education standards which are designed to provide graduates with the knowledge and competencies to sit for the CDR credentialing exam.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
