Job Title: Crossing Guard

Crossing Guards are responsible for the safety of school children going to and returning from school at an assigned location. The work involves traffic control, supervising people in crossing streets with an emphasis on safety. Employees will work from 8:15 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday when school is in session. Effective Jan 1, 2026, $ 16.88 per crossing. Crossing Location: Walker Street and Second Street.

Tasks Routinely Performed
  • Assists children in safely crossing the street on their way to and from school.
  • Applies appropriate knowledge of traffic laws and uses clear and proper traffic management signals to both pedestrians and vehicular traffic to safely cross any person within the designated school crossing zones.
  • Keeps children on the curb until there is a sufficient break in traffic to allow safe crossing.
  • Counsels children regarding unsafe behavior.
  • Reports and discusses unsafe behavior to school officials.
  • Summons emergency help if needed, such as police or fire.
  • Documents and reports school crossing violations made by motorists including accidents and failure to obey traffic signs.
Qualifications
  • Ability to read and write and follow instructions.
  • Ability to interact on a friendly basis with school age children.
  • Willingness to work in all types of weather conditions.
  • High School graduate or equivalency.
  • Ability to pass a personal background investigation.
  • After training by the Police Department, direct and control vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

Physical Demands:

  • Requires occasional bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, and kneeling.
  • Requires ability to continuously carry up to 10 lbs.
  • May be required to lift an injured child to safety.
  • Must be able to firmly grasp a stop sign. Requires distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
Essential Knowledge & Skills
  • Knowledge of traffic laws.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of assisting people across busy streets.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and decisiveness in determining when to safely cross children.
  • Ability to work independently and in compliance with department policies and procedures.
