Senior .NET Engineer

What You Will Be Doing You will serve as a solo contributor for a focused modernization project within the engineering team. You will own the technical execution from porting legacy .NET Framework Windows Services to modern .NET environments, specifically targeting .NET 8 or 9. Your responsibilities include analyzing existing codebases, building comprehensive validation test harnesses, rewriting service endpoints to REST/JSON, and provisioning cloud infrastructure on Azure. You will collaborate closely with client engineers to ensure smooth knowledge transfer and supportability of the modernized platform, delivering a production‑ready solution within an 8–10 week window. Additionally, you’ll implement CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure as code with Terraform, while documenting decisions for ongoing support. Key Responsibilities Analyze legacy .NET Framework code to identify patterns suitable for migration. Port .NET Framework Windows Services to .NET 8/9, removing dependencies and refactoring workflows. Develop RESTful APIs to replace existing WCF service contracts with proper payloads and security controls. Build an XML test corpus covering key EDI transaction sets and create a reusable validation harness. Provision Azure resources, including Function Apps, Application Insights, and optionally Service Bus, using Terraform scripts. Implement CI/CD pipelines to automate deployments across environments, including US and Canadian production setups. Collaborate with client engineers to transfer knowledge and ensure platform operability post‑engagement. Document architecture decisions, environment configurations, and deployment procedures to facilitate ongoing support. Validate implementation through existing validation utilities and comprehensive testing before delivery. Surface scope risks early, providing honest effort estimates and frequent status updates throughout the project. Required Skills & Experience 10+ years of software engineering experience with significant expertise in the .NET ecosystem. Proven track record of delivering at least one complete legacy‑to‑modern .NET migration, preferably involving porting Windows Services to Azure Functions. Hands‑on experience migrating .NET Framework applications to .NET 8 or 9. Strong understanding of Azure Functions, including queue, and timer triggers, with production experience. Proficiency with Azure DevOps pipelines, Terraform scripting, and cloud infrastructure provisioning. Deep experience working with WCF, RESTful API design, and transition strategies from SOAP/WCF to REST/JSON. Expertise in XML processing, XSD validation, and EDI document handling is essential. Familiarity with dependency injection patterns in older and newer .NET versions, including Microsoft.Extensions.DependencyInjection. Solid understanding of application telemetry, Application Insights, and distributed tracing frameworks. Excellent written communication skills and ability to document complex technical information clearly. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, managing scope and risks proactively. Desired Skills & Experience Experience with .NET 8 or .NET 9 in a production environment. Prior exposure to EDI transactions, especially X12 or EDIFACT, and partner‑integration processes. Knowledge of Azure Storage, Key Vault, and Service Bus or comparable AWS/GCP services. Industry experience in distribution, logistics, or supply‑chain domains. Azure certifications such as AZ‑204 or AZ‑400. Demonstrated ability to lead knowledge transfer sessions to client engineering teams.
