The Senior Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for performing medically prescribed nuclear medicine procedures while operating with a high degree of autonomy. This role supports departmental operations through advanced technical expertise, mentorship of staff and students, and assistance with workflow coordination, staffing coverage, and quality initiatives. Works under general supervision to ensure high-quality diagnostic results, patient safety, and regulatory compliance.Job Responsibilities:Patient Care & Procedure ExecutionVerify patient identity using approved protocols and review physician orders for accuracyExplain procedures clearly and obtain consent when requiredPrepare patients for procedures, ensuring comfort, privacy, and safetyAdminister radiopharmaceuticals and perform imaging and non-imaging procedures per established protocolsMonitor patients throughout procedures and respond to any adverse reactions or emergenciesAdjust imaging techniques and protocols based on patient condition and clinical indicationsServe as a clinical resource for complex or high-risk casesImaging & Technical ResponsibilitiesOperate nuclear medicine imaging equipment, including gamma cameras and related systemsAcquire, process, and evaluate diagnostic images for quality and completenessFormat, archive, and transmit imaging data to PACS in proper anatomical presentationPerform data analysis and provide results to physicians for interpretationTroubleshoot advanced technical issues and optimize imaging protocolsSupport implementation of new imaging techniques and protocolsRadiopharmaceutical & Radiopharmacy DutiesPrepare, calculate, and verify radiopharmaceutical doses using appropriate techniques and dose calibratorsHandle, store, and dispose of radioactive materials in accordance with safety regulationsPerform generator elution and prepare radiopharmaceuticals per manufacturer guidelinesConduct wipe tests and ensure proper labeling and handling of radioactive materialsEnsure adherence to best practices and mentor staff on radiopharmacy proceduresRadiation Safety & ComplianceAdhere to all radiation safety protocols and regulatory requirementsMinimize radiation exposure to patients, staff, and selfPerform contamination surveys and decontamination procedures as requiredMaintain compliance with local, state, and federal regulationsServe as a resource for radiation safety practices and compliance standardsQuality Control & DocumentationPerform routine quality control checks on imaging equipment and dose calibratorsMaintain accurate records of radiopharmaceutical preparation, administration, and disposalDocument imaging procedures, patient interactions, and quality assurance activitiesEnsure completeness and accuracy of all required logs and reportsAssist with QA/QC oversight and continuous quality improvement initiativesSystems & Workflow ManagementUtilize Hospital Information Systems (HIS), Radiology Information Systems (RIS), and PACSAccurately document patient workflow, including exam start, completion, and departure timesSchedule and modify exams as needed within system workflowsMaintain cleanliness and readiness of work areas and equipmentAssist with daily workflow coordination, staffing coverage, and prioritization of casesCollaboration, Leadership & SupportAssist physicians during procedures as neededCoordinate with healthcare team members to ensure efficient patient careAdapt workflow to accommodate STAT and emergency casesRecognize and escalate medical emergencies appropriatelyProvide mentorship and guidance to junior technologists and new hiresSupport onboarding, training, and competency validation of staffEducation & Additional DutiesProvide guidance and supervision to students during clinical trainingEvaluate student performance and support skill developmentAct as a preceptor and role model for clinical excellencePerform other duties as assignedWorking Conditions / Physical DemandsAbility to lift, push, pull, or move patients and equipment (up to 150 lbs., with or without assistive devices)Prolonged standing and walkingExposure to radioactive materials (with appropriate safety controls)Flexible scheduling, including potential evenings, weekends, or on-call coverageMinimum Qualifications:Associate's Degree or Certificate from an accredited School of Radiologic Technology.New York State Radiologic Technologist License in Nuclear Medicine.ARRT in Nuclear Medicine or NMTCB Certification.3 to 5 years of experience is required.BLS Certification.Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
