Commercial Underwriter

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

• Analyzes borrower credit worthiness, including character, capacity, collateral, capital and economic conditions, by collecting and reviewing financial statements, tax returns, accessing credit reports, internet searches, and subscription services (IBISWorld, Moody's. Abrigo).
• Maintains and applies current, in-depth knowledge and skill in reading, interpreting and analyzing financial statements, ratios, credit reports, personal and corporate tax returns, spreadsheets and peer ratio comparisons to identify positive and negative trends.
• Prepares thorough and accurate documentation for loans, and issue action letters to prospective borrowers, e.g., Term Sheets, Commitment Letters, and Notices of Default.

Prepares loan requests for initial and periodic credit reviews and conducts credit analysis by using analytical tools to produce spreads, analyses and pre-screens for loan package compilation. Ensures the accurate application of loan policies and notates any policy exceptions and recommended risk ratings.

• Stays up to date with underwriting policy, suggests changes to enhance/improve existing credit policy.
• Manages the workflow of credit requests to provide them in accordance with established service level agreements.
• Works with loan officers and/or borrowers directly to obtain additional documentation, answer borrower questions regarding loan requests, and address the more complex aspects of loan structuring, including long term, fixed vs. variable rates, amortization schedules, construction terms, and other variables.
• Follows or notates any exceptions to MAFCU and Affiliate Credit Union loan policies; and SBA, NCUA, and other required lending regulations.
• Prepares annual reviews of the credit union's commercial loan portfolio at least annually to determine risk rating and compliance with loan covenants.
• Prepares quarterly Criticized Loan Reports and applies Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) Accounting Standards Update (ASU) No. 2016-13 to calculate special reserves for credits risk rated Special Mention or less.
• Maintains excellent communication and working relationships with loan officers, co-workers, and members.
• Provides support and insight to management on delinquent commercial loans and loss mitigation.
• Assists with the annual review/revision of MAFCU's MBL policy.
• Assist in collecting outstanding financials and other loan related items.
• Assist in loan work-outs and collection of past due payments.
• Perform duties of a portfolio manager.
• Completes annually required training in a timely manner.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Performance Measurements:

• To provide prompt and courteous service to internal and external customers.
• To turn around credit requests in accordance with established service level agreements
• To protect Credit Union assets and records, and member information privacy by adhering to established procedures and guidelines
• To remain cognizant of and adhere to MAFCU policies, procedures, and regulations pertaining to all lending regulations.

Knowledge and Skills: Experience 5+ years of commercial underwriting. Education College Degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience Interpersonal Skills Work involves much personal contact with others inside and/or outside the organization for the purpose of first-level conflict resolution, building relationships, and soliciting cooperation. Discussions involve a higher degree of confidentiality and discretion, requiring diplomacy and tact in communication. Other Skills PC proficiency in Microsoft Office Word and Excel. Physical Requirements This position is primarily based in a general office environment.
