Registered Nurse

REGISTERED NURSE (RN)The nurse works in collaboration with other members of the educational and healthcare team to coordinate and provide health services to scholars to enable them to participate in the educational process. The nurse uses clinical judgment to assess and treat scholars' illnesses and injuries. The school nurse may delegate and supervise support staff providing health services to scholars. The school nurse is a leader in health promotion and disease prevention and works to maintain a safe school environment.Required Education and Experience:Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of MichiganBachelor's degree in nursingMaintenance of yearly CPR certificationPreferred Qualifications:A master's degree in nursingA minimum of one (1) year of nursing experienceExperience with medically fragile childrenAbility to speak and understand Spanish is desirableKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Ability to make quality, independent decisions and solve practical problems with a variety of variablesAbility to instruct and direct the work of othersAble to work effectively and efficiently under tight deadlines, high volumes, and multiple interruptionsAbility to apply knowledge of current research and theory to nursing practice to meet the needs of scholarsAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse scholars, peers, parents, and communityStrong time management and organizational skills, with effective written and verbal communication abilitiesEssential Job Functions:Assesses and monitors physiological, psychological, and sociocultural needs of scholars, and the school communityDevelops and maintains a written individualized healthcare plan for scholar health concerns that is consistent with the scholars' changing needs/goals. The care plan is congruent with physician orders, district policies and procedures and legal mandatesProvides and/or delegates health services consistent with the written plan of careProvides leadership to the school healthcare team using effective organizational skills, systematic problem solving and communication skills (verbal/written)Establishes and maintains a comprehensive school health services program that is consistent with district healthcare standardsDocuments nursing care/ education consistent with documentation guidelines and compiles accurate reportsArranges and manages the physical setting of the health officeDelegates and supervises support staff to facilitate quality services in a cost-effective mannerParticipates with others to develop, review, and revise protocols, procedures and guidelines related to the prevention and control of chronic health conditions and injuries and the maintenance of a healthy school environmentCollaborates with members of the school and community in the delivery of health and social services and utilizes knowledge of school-community health systems and resources to ensure access, continuity, coordination of these servicesParticipates with other nurses to develop and implement ongoing quality improvement activitiesMaintains knowledge of current trends and development in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature and attending related conferences or seminarsMay visit homes of scholars to facilitate communication with those who have communication barriers or need an assessment of the home environmentEducate scholars, staff and others on health topics to promote health, maintain a safe environment, prevent disease, minimize the impact of disabilityDemonstrates good attendance and punctualityConsistently demonstrate dependable attendance and punctualityOther duties as assignedConsistently demonstrate dependable attendance and punctuality.Perform other duties as assigned.ADA Requirements:The physical demands, work environment factors, and mental functions described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
