Aquarium Birds Intern

Job Title: Aquarium Birds Intern at Omaha Zoo, Omaha, NE. This seasonal internship offers up to 24 hours per week over a 12‑week fall session (September22–December14,2026). Pay is $15.00 per hour. Interns must be at least 18 years old, currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a college or university, and have at least one year of coursework in a related field; background checks and drug screening are required. Schedule: Interns must attend orientation on the first day of the semester (9:00AM–4:00PM) and be available for all work and professional‑development sessions, including weekends and holidays. Responsibilities Develop, work on, and present an internship project aligned with the research needs of the Aquarium Birds department. Attend weekly professional development sessions. Complete learning goals on the internship checklist. Participate in and complete a mid‑point and final evaluation. Assist with the following tasks: Cleaning and general maintenance of exhibits and the building. Daily care of the animal collection. Record‑keeping. Animal enrichment. Monitoring behavior and changes in animal health. Diet preparation and feeding. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications & Requirements Minimum age of 18 years. Current enrollment or recent graduation from a college or university. Preferred: one year of coursework in biology, zoology, animal behavior, or related field; knowledge of aquatic bird natural history and husbandry. Preferred: previous experience with birds or at an AZA institution. Ability to lift and manipulate heavy objects (50+pounds) and perform work in awkward positions. Effective time‑management, strong communication, and professional teamwork skills. Ability to follow detailed instructions and work independently or with a team. Willingness to work weekends and holidays. Must attend shifts on time and as scheduled. Pre‑employment background check and drug screening will be required. Physical Demands: Position may involve considerable physical exertion, including lifting 50+pounds and exposure to hot, humid, and wet conditions. Public Interaction: Interns will interact with the public on a frequent basis and are expected to exhibit professionalism, exceptional customer service, and may engage in public speaking.
