Transplant Nephrology Fellowship Opportunity Mayo Clinic in Arizona | Academic Year 2027–2028 The Division of Nephrology at Mayo Clinic in Arizona is accepting applications for one available position in its one-year ACGME-accredited Transplant Nephrology Fellowship for the 2027–2028 academic year. High-volume transplant experience: Mayo Clinic in Arizona performs more than 500 kidney transplants annually, making it one of the largest kidney transplant centers in the country. The program consistently ranks among the top 5% of U.S. centers for kidney and pancreas transplant volume, providing fellows with outstanding experience managing transplant recipients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Personalized mentorship and faculty access: With 13 transplant nephrology faculty members and two fellowship positions, the program offers a highly personalized training experience, with close mentorship, broad faculty access, and individualized support for each fellow’s clinical, academic, research, and career goals. Innovation in transplantation: Mayo Clinic in Arizona is a pioneering center in maximizing marginal deceased donor organ utilization without compromising recipient outcomes. Fellows gain unique exposure to complex donor selection, organ acceptance, and innovative approaches to transplant care. Comprehensive multidisciplinary training: Fellows lead multidisciplinary inpatient rounds and participate in all aspects of care on both primary and consult transplant services under close faculty supervision. In the outpatient setting, fellows collaborate with surgical colleagues in donor and recipient evaluation, transplant selection, waitlist management, and longitudinal care of kidney and pancreas transplant recipients. Dedicated Rotations Renal Pathology – 3-week rotation with renal pathologists, exposure to protocol biopsies at 0, 1, 4, and 12 months after kidney transplant, with approximately 1,000 transplant biopsies reviewed annually. Radiology – 1-week rotation with radiologists focused on renal ultrasound, CT abdomen findings relevant to kidney transplantation, and transplant kidney biopsy training. Transplant Immunology Laboratory – 2-week rotation in the Mayo Clinic Arizona HLA laboratory, covering HLA typing, crossmatching, flow cytometry, and other transplant‑related testing. Transplant Infectious Diseases – Inpatient experience with the transplant infectious disease service, with exposure to a broad range of infectious complications among kidney, pancreas, liver, heart, and bone marrow transplant recipients. Research – Four weeks of dedicated research time with transplant nephrology faculty involved in intramurally and extramurally funded projects. Fellows typically present their work at national conferences. Elective Experience – Three weeks of elective time allow fellows to personalize their training through additional experience in research, infectious diseases, apheresis, transplant surgery, pathology, or other areas of interest. Academic and Teaching Environment Fellows participate in a rich educational curriculum, including: Renal Biopsy Conference, twice monthly Transplant Selection Conference, weekly Transplant Journal Club, monthly Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Academic Conference, twice monthly Transplant Grand Rounds, monthly Clinical Case Vignette Conference, monthly Organ Offers Review, monthly Complex Patient Committee Meeting, weekly Solid Organ Transplant Morbidity and Mortality Conference, weekly Fellow as Educator Fellows have meaningful teaching opportunities through Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine’s Arizona campus and during the renal block. They also lead teams of learners on the inpatient primary and consult services, including internal medicine residents, fourth‑year medical students, and PA fellows.
