Unit Bio: Neuro ICU at Maine Medical Center; Where Critical Thinking Meets Compassionate Care

Welcome to the Neuro Intensive Care Unit at Maine Medical Centera specialized 12-bed unit dedicated to the care of patients with complex and life-threatening neurological and neurosurgical conditions. As part of a Comprehensive Stroke Center and Magnet hospital, our team is recognized for delivering cutting-edge, high-acuity care with precision, teamwork, and heart.

Who We Care For:

We specialize in the management of patients with:

• Acute ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, including post-thrombectomy care
• Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage
• Status epilepticus and other complex seizure disorders
• Post-cardiac arrest patients requiring target temperature management or EVD/ICP PbO2 management
• Severe neuromuscular conditions (e.g., myasthenic or Guillain-Barr crises)
• Neurosurgical patients, including those undergoing:
• Brain tumor resections
• Craniotomies
• External ventricular drain (EVD) placement and management
• Patients requiring advanced neurological monitoring such as continuous EEG, pupillometry, PbO2 monitoring

The acuity of our patients requires nurses to be vigilant, confident in neuro assessments, and quick to act. Many of our patients require mechanical ventilation, vasoactive support, and frequent neuro exams to identify subtle but critical changes.

Summary:

The Clinical Nurse supports Maine Medical Center's mission, vision, and values by exhibiting the following behaviors: excellence, competence, collaboration, innovation, respect, patient and family centered care, commitment to our community, and accountability. In accordance with national standards of nursing practice and within the guidelines and policies and procedures of both Maine Medical Center and the Maine State Board of Nursing, the Clinical Nurse is responsible for assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, documentation, and evaluation of the effects of nursing care. Care delivery and coordination of patient and family care begins with the initial contact with the health care system and may continue across the continuum. Services may be provided on an inpatient, outpatient, ambulatory, and/or community basis.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

1. Education: Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred. Evidence of 10 hours of ongoing education per year.

2. License/Certifications: Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Maine. Certification in relevant specialty preferred.

3. Experience: Meets all requirements of Clinical Nurse I. Completion of Level I usually achieved by 12 months of employment. Neuro experience preferred. ICU experience strongly preferred.

4. Basic knowledge of the research base, theory, practices, principles, and processes of professional nursing.

5. Interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.

6. Analytical ability sufficient to identify changes in patients conditions and to initiate appropriate action.

7. Ability to identify potential crisis situations involving patients and/or families and to initiate appropriate action.

8. Demonstrates a caring nursing practice and promotes a healing environment for patients and families.

9. Demonstrates the required knowledge and technical skills to care for most patient populations on the unit.

The base range is an estimate and does not reflect the full value of our total compensation package.

The pay range for this position is $41.34 to $60.22 per hour.

Compensation for part-time positions is determined on a prorated basis consistent with the scheduled hours and applicable full-time equivalent (FTE).
