Surgical First Assistant, Rotating Shift, Operating Room

Position Overview Shady Grove Medical Center seeks to hire an experienced Surgical First Assistant for our Operating Room who will embrace our mission to extend God’s care through the ministry of physical, mental, and spiritual healing. Responsibilities Provide visualization of the operative site by placing retractors, packing with sponges or packs, manipulating tissues, suctioning, sponging, or irrigating. Assist with hemostasis by clamping, cauterizing, tying or ligating vessels or tissues, applying hemostatic clips, and placing local hemostatic agents. Assist the OR team in setting up the operating room, selecting equipment, and positioning apparatus for the surgery; anticipate additional instruments and supplies needed. Collaborate with the surgical team on patient positioning to ensure proper alignment, padding of pressure points, preservation of circulation and nerve integrity, and safe access for anesthesia; follow surgeon preferences while maintaining patient comfort and safety. Anticipate the surgeon’s or physicians’ moves and respond expeditiously. Close body planes using appropriate techniques. Apply appropriate wound dressings, including liquid, spray, absorbent material, and immobilization dressings. Introduce self to the patient, answer questions or direct inquiries to licensed personnel. Work collaboratively with the surgical team to expedite safe surgical care. Transport patient to the Post‑Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) with the assistance of the anesthesia provider. Assist in prepping the OR for the next patient. Qualifications Associate’s degree or equivalent in a related field. At least 3 years of experience as a Surgical First Assistant. Certification conferred by ABSA, NBSTSA, or NSSA; initial certification CSFA, CSA, or SA‑C. Graduate of a CAAHEP‑recognized Surgical Assistant program. Maintain mandated certification competencies and CEU’s. Experience as a Surgical Scrub Tech strongly preferred. Active American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; ACLS preferred, to be obtained within the first year. Work Schedule Employment type: Full‑time Hours per week: 36 Typical daily schedule: 7 am – 7 pm or 9 am – 9 pm, Monday through Friday Shift type: Day Weekend requirements: On‑call as needed Holiday requirements: Follow company holiday calendar On‑call: Yes, approximately 12–24 hours per month Shift differential eligible: Yes Pay Range $39.96 – $59.94 per hour. Salary discussions occur during the screening process for any other stated rates.
