The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is seeking a Grounds Assistant. The role is responsible for the cultivation and care of the landscaping and grounds surrounding buildings. Performs general grounds landscaping duties both inside and outside of a secure juvenile correctional complex. Coordinate activities to assure grounds and related areas are maintained in a safe and clean condition for residents, staff, and the public. The incumbent must have a valid driver's license as well as the ability to meet physical demands to include lifting heavy objects. This is an hourly/wage position and is limited to 1500 hours to average 29 hours per week in a 12-month period. This position does not include the state benefit package.

Minimum Qualifications

• Considerable knowledge of grounds maintenance procedures, methods, equipment, tools, supplies, and materials used in gardening and grounds maintenance.
• Demonstrated ability to receive, assess, prioritize and coordinate response to grounds maintenance work orders to meet schedules and timelines.
• Demonstrated ability to read, write, understand, and communicate effectively.
• Demonstrated ability in operation and maintenance of vehicles, tractor, hand and power tools, and equipment used in ground maintenance.
• Knowledge of related safety and health practices.

Additional Considerations

• High School graduate or equivalent.
