Staff Attorney

Staff Attorney – Philadelphia, Delaware Widener University is currently seeking a Staff Attorney for its Philadelphia site of the Health, Education, and Legal Assistance Project: A Medical‑Legal Partnership at Delaware Law School (HELP: MLP). This hybrid position requires the Staff Attorney to provide civil legal assistance to families with low incomes participating in maternal and child health programs. The role is part of an interdisciplinary team that coordinates direct legal services to clients, trains public health partners, and engages in systemic advocacy. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Essential) Provide direct legal services to clients, including litigation of landlord/tenant, public benefits and other matters. Develop and deliver trainings to public health and community partners. Develop educational materials for public health partners and clients. Manage and organize client information using forms and an electronic legal case management system. Perform legal research and writing. Engage in systemic advocacy to advance policy goals and improve community‑wide health. Participate in local, state and national coalitions and workgroups. Support the development of grant applications, reports, newsletters, articles and other written publications. Travel locally as needed to see clients and participate in work‑related activities. Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of basic legal principles relevant to area(s) of practice. Other duties as assigned. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Secondary) Provide supervision and mentorship to law students as needed. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Required) Admission to the Pennsylvania Bar or eligibility to take and pass the next Pennsylvania bar examination. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent organizational and time‑management skills. Proficiency in using modern technology, including an electronic case‑management database. Ability to contribute to grant applications, reports and other publications. Willingness to travel within the Philadelphia area. Commitment to improving the lives of families with low incomes. Willingness and ability to work in an interdisciplinary setting with public health partners. Flexibility to work in any HELP: MLP area of practice as priorities shift. Preferred Qualifications Verbal and written fluency in Spanish. At least 3 years of legal services experience in public benefits, housing law or family law. Lived experience similar to the clients served. Familiarity with Philadelphia legal networks and community resources.
