Oncology Lab Phlebotomist - Outpatient Specimen Collection

Job Description The Laboratory Phlebotomist is responsible for the collection of patient specimens for laboratory testing, following proper guidelines for safe handling of blood, body fluids, and hazardous chemicals; recording lab testing; quality control and assurance; and maintaining appropriate inventory levels of reagents and supplies. Essential Functions Perform clean venipunctures and capillary collections. Follow guidelines for safe handling of blood, body fluids and hazardous chemicals. Demonstrate knowledge of procedures and ongoing quality assurance activities, documenting breaches of quality. Maintain appropriate inventory levels of reagents and supplies. Identify and correct problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting, or notify Clinic Operations Manager and Clinical Laboratory Operations Manager. Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications. Document in charts for “lab only” visits. Use and understand LIS, including ordering, rejecting, locating, and printing results. Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Excellent phlebotomy skills. Experience in outpatient facility or physician office. Education & Experience High school diploma required. Phlebotomist/Medical Assistant with 2 years of clinical lab experience preferred. One year phlebotomy experience preferred. Phlebotomy certification preferred but not required. Physical Requirements Standing, walking, sitting, repetitive finger motion, manual dexterity. Lifting or exerting force up to 10 pounds, up to 25 pounds, up to 50 pounds, up to 100 pounds, over 100 pounds. Reaching or stretching, climbing or balancing, crouching or stooping.
