To empower students to make responsible choices about their social, scholastic and future professional lives.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. In addition to the requirements listed below, regular attendance is an essential function of this position. 1. Ensures that all actions are in concert with the Board policies as well as the mission statement, beliefs, objectives and parameters found in the Board's strategic plan.
2. Carries out such additional duties as required or as conditions necessitate.
3. Participates in job training and professional growth opportunities in order to enhance ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
4. Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.
5. Be readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding and maturity.
6. Help students evaluate career interests and choices.
7. Aid students in course and subject selection.
8. Work to discover and develop special abilities of students.
9. Work to resolve students' educational deficiencies.
10. Work to prevent students from dropping out of school.
11. Work with students on in individual basis in the solution of personal issues related to home and family relations, peer pressures, health and emotional adjustments.
12. Assist students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data, and work with students in evolving education and occupation career plans in terms of such evaluation.
13. Guide students in their participation in school and community activities.
14. Confer with parents whenever necessary.
15. Arrange for tutors and summer school, and work description.
16. Assist in the preparation and processing of college, scholarship, and employment applications.
17. Make recommendations to colleges for admissions and scholarship.
18. Provide students' information to colleges and potential employers according to provisions of the Board's policy on student records.
19. Register students new to the school and orient them to the school procedures and the school's varied opportunities for learning.
20. Maintain students' records and protect their confidentiality.
21. Work with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the student support personnel services department, and to improve the educational prospects of individual students being counseled.
22. Work with administrators to develop the schedule for classes to meet the needs of students.
23. Work with the Community Agencies to assist students in specific concerns.
24. Any other duties assigned by the building principal.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Type 73 Illinois School Personnel Certification, with endorsement for Guidance Counselor.
