Mail Processing Equipment Junior Clerk – San Francisco Department of Elections (1402 Junior Clerk) Full-time Job Code and Title: 1402-Junior Clerk Fill Type: Temporary Exempt Department Background The mission of the Department of Elections (Department) is to provide equitable access to voting and election-related services and to conduct free, fair, and functional elections for the City and County of San Francisco. Department staff work year-round to ensure that every eligible San Franciscan has easy access to safe, barrier-free registration and voting options. The Department also works continuously to improve its elections programs with the goal of making them ever more efficient and responsive to the needs of San Francisco voters. Position Description In preparation for the November 3, 2026, Consolidated General Election, the Department is seeking applications for seasonal positions as Mail Processing Equipment Junior Clerk (1402 Junior Clerk). Under immediate supervision, the Mail Processing Equipment Junior Clerk performs basic clerical and mail-handling duties associated with the Department's mail processing operation. The position works alongside Mail Processing Equipment Operators (1404 Clerk) and is primarily responsible for receiving processed election mail as it exits the mail processing equipment, removing and placing mail into designated trays or containers, organizing and staging processed mail, maintaining routine counts and records, and performing related mail-handling tasks according to established procedures. Receive and collect processed election mail as it exits automated mail processing equipment. Remove processed mail from designated output areas and place it into the appropriate trays, bins, containers, or other designated locations according to established procedures. Sort and organize processed mail according to designated categories, sequences, and instructions. Replace full trays, bins, or containers and stage completed containers in designated areas for subsequent processing or handling. Prepare and replenish empty trays, bins, containers, and other materials needed to support continuous mail processing operations. Identify and separate mail requiring additional processing or review and place or route it to the designated location according to established procedures. Maintain routine counts, labels, logs, and other basic records related to mail received and handled. Monitor designated output areas for accumulating mail, full containers, irregular mail flow, or other observable issues and promptly notify the Mail Processing Equipment Operator or supervisor. Move processed and unprocessed mail between designated work areas as directed. Perform routine checks to ensure processed mail is placed in the appropriate designated trays, containers, or processing areas according to established instructions. Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area and ensure that trays, bins, containers, and other supplies are readily available for continued mail processing. Perform other basic clerical and mail-handling duties as assigned. Assist with other basic clerical and election-related tasks as required by operational needs. Position Schedule, Requirements, and Work Location This is a seasonal position with a tentative start date of October 26, 2026, and a tentative end date between November 6 and November 13, 2026. Actual start and end dates will depend on the Department’s operational needs. Work will primarily be performed on site at the Department of Elections office at City Hall in San Francisco. Employees may also be required to work at the Department’s warehouse at Pier 31 or at other locations within San Francisco, as operationally necessary. Work schedules will vary based on the demands of the election cycle and may range from 20 to 40 hours per week. Candidates must be available to work flexible schedules, including mandatory evenings, weekends, holidays, and overnight shifts. During the peak election period, beginning on Election Day, November 3, 2026, and continuing for approximately three to five days thereafter, candidates must be available to work overnight shifts, which may include shifts of approximately 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. Actual schedules will be determined based on operational needs. Overtime hours are paid at 1.5 times the regular hourly rate. The position requires prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing and the ability to lift and handle items weighing up to 25 pounds. This is a temporary exempt, as-needed position. Temporary exempt as-needed employees who have worked more than 1,040 hours in any consecutive 12-month period and whose normal workweek at the time of inclusion in the system is not less than 20 hours may be eligible for health coverage and retirement benefits. Position Salary: $29.55 per hour Minimum Qualifications: Six (6) months of clerical experience including preparing and maintaining a variety of records and/or documents, filing, use of office equipment, public contact and processing of incoming and outgoing mail. Substitution: Any of the following may substitute for the required experience: Completion of 15 semester units (or equivalent quarter units) of coursework from an accredited college or university; OR Completion of a clerical training program (240 hours); OR Completion of an approved City and County of San Francisco Clerical Administrative Training program. Desirable Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have: Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and established mail-handling procedures. Strong attention to detail and accuracy when sorting, organizing, and handling election mail. Ability to perform repetitive mail-handling and sorting tasks accurately and efficiently for extended periods. Ability to maintain routine counts, logs, labels, and other basic processing records. Ability to recognize and promptly report irregular mail flow, full output containers, or other observable processing issues. Ability to remain attentive and organized while working in a high-volume, deadline-driven environment. Dependability, punctuality, and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
