This is a Open recruitment to establish an eligibility list, fill vacancies, and hire substitutes. Substitutes work on an as-needed basis to fill in for absent employees. The eligibility list will be used to fill permanent vacancies which may occur during the life of the eligibility list. Positions in this classification are part-time, 20 hours per week, 12 months/216 workdays per year.
The recruitment process will consist of a written and/or an oral technical interview which is tentatively scheduled during the weeks of June 8, 2026 - June 26, 2026 . Qualified applicants will be notified by email.

BASIC FUNCTION
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assists in the assessment of students for placement and in the instructional activities of Adult School students enrolled in Adult School Programs; performs routine clerical work; and performs related work as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Instructional Assistant-Adult School incumbents work with adult students enrolled in various programs located at the Adult School. Instructional Assistant-Computer Applications incumbents work with adult students in a computer lab located at the Adult School. Senior Instructional Assistant incumbents work within a special education, specially-funded, pull-out program or other setting characterized by increased independence of action and increased complexity of work based on unique needs of the students served or equipment operated. Instructional Assistant incumbents assist a certificated teacher by performing a variety of support functions in a regular classroom setting.

FUNCTION & DUTIES


Enroll students in various educational programs offered at the Adult School. E

Monitor status and progress of students in special mandated programs such as educational programs aimed at improvement of the students' academic achievement levels. E

Administer and grade students' completed tests; post scores on students' grade cards; file graded work, grade cards, attendance records and test answer keys. E

Check out textbooks, videos, audiotapes, headphones and other instructional equipment to students. E

Greet the public and new students to the site; answer questions from students on assigned Adult School program entry requirements, GED test preparation requirements and procedures, registration, and enrollment procedures. E

Refer students to the teacher for tutoring as appropriate. E

Take and report attendance according to state and federal adult attendance reporting requirements and produce ad hoc attendance reports. E

Set up and maintain student records and files. E

Perform a variety of clerical and record keeping duties such as typing, data entry and operating duplicating equipment, specific to assignment. E

Perform related duties as assigned.

Note: At the end of some of the duty statements there is an "E" which identifies essential duties required of the classification.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE, LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS


Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and a minimum of six months' experience working in an educational setting; one year's experience working in an educational setting is preferred.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Some positions in this class may be required to utilize a second designated language.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

ENVIRONMENT:
Adult School with students arriving and departing continuously. Incumbents may be required to work a flexible schedule.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Seeing to monitor student behavior during classroom activities; hearing and speaking to provide assistance and information related to classroom assignments; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate computer equipment; and bending at the waist, kneeling, and standing and walking for extended periods of time.
Part-time Employees earn up to:

  • 1 paid vacation day per 1 full month of employment


  • 1 paid sick leave day per 1 full month of employment with unlimited accumulation

  • and paid holidays
The District offers two excellent medical plans, Blue Shield and Kaiser Permanente ; two dental plans, Delta Dental and MetLife SafeGuard ; and vision care through Vision Service Plan (VSP). All plans are available to the employee and their dependents. This coverage is available to employees working a minimum of 20 hours per week.
Retirement benefits include membership in CalPERS (California Public Employee's Retirement System) and Social Security (OASDI). This is a joint contribution plan. To qualify for CalPERS an employee must work a minimum of 20 hours per week or already be a member, if not the employee is eligible for an alternative retirement plan.
Additionally, the District encourages employees to pursue professional growth, and provides financial incentive for classified employees completing professional growth programs. Additional benefits available to employees to which the District does not contribute include life insurance, a Section 125 Flexible Benefit Plan, an income protection plan, and a credit union.
Substitute employees are not eligible for vacation or holiday pay but are eligible to earn sick leave at the rate of one hour per 30 hours worked, not to exceed 48 hours. Further, substitute employees are not automatically eligible for CalPERS or District health benefits.
