Battery Engineer

Quino Energy is seeking a passionate and detail-oriented Battery Engineer to join our team at our lab in San Leandro, CA. This role will play a critical part in the assembly, testing, and analysis of Quino’s water-based organic flow battery technology. The position is integral to the development, construction, testing, and implementation of flow battery prototypes and field deployments for government and commercial customers.

Key Responsibilities

• Work independently or support other battery engineers in designing, constructing, commissioning, operating, and disassembling flow battery systems at lab-, pilot-scale and beyond
• Design and perform experiments to study factors that affect the performance of flow-battery components such as stacks, porous electrodes, membranes, etc. and provide solutions for improvement
• Analyze the performance of flow batteries at various scales using electrochemical techniques including cell cycling, Cyclic Voltammetry, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, and other relevant techniques
• Work independently or support other battery engineers to simulate flow battery systems using computational fluid dynamics and relevant software, such as COMSOL
• Perform analytical tests including pH measurement
• Balance competing resources and cross-functional objectives in a fast-paced environment
• Prepare and present progress reports to the rest of the team and engage in discussions to support the team’s technical objectives
• Train, guide and define tasks for technicians and/or interns to facilitate work at high standards
• Assist in setting up laboratory equipment, such as battery testers, glove boxes, furnaces, etc.

Requirements

• MS or PhD in chemistry, engineering, or a field related to energy storage or electrochemical systems.
• 3-5 years of hands-on (or a combination of modeling and hands-on) experience in working with electrochemical systems such as flow batteries, fuel-cells, Li-Ion batteries, or so on (grad-school research experience is accepted if relevant).
• Experience of working with battery testers such as BioLogic, Arbin, MACCOR, or Neware
• Experience in computational fluid dynamics and relevant software such as COMSOL is a plus.
• Ability to execute multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
• Fluency in technical and business English and Mandarin Chinese, including technical writing, proposal development, and public presentation skills.
• This role includes the possibility of infrequent domestic and/or international travel to support upcoming deployments or joint development activities with company partners. Travel will be scheduled only as needed and is not a routine part of the position.
• Available to start in Q2 2026.

Benefits and Compensation

$110,000-140,000 in annual salary depending on experience and qualifications, as well as additional stock options, subject to vesting and Board approval of the options. We offer top-of-the-line insurance benefits including platinum plans for medical, dental, and vision, 3 weeks paid time off annually, and participation in the company 401(k) plan with a company match. Relocation benefit (taxable) is available up to $5,000. We provide unlimited snacks and refreshments as well as a weekly company lunch during work hours.

Quino Energy is the leading developer of organic flow batteries, based on a water-based redox flow battery technology licensed from Harvard University, for utilities and communities. The batteries use chemicals made from coal tar and petroleum aromatics to store energy, rather than critical materials that use lithium, cobalt, nickel, vanadium, and so on. In addition, our batteries are nonflammable because all active materials are dissolved in water and the battery does not produce hydrogen during charging.

Quino Energy is piloting organic flow batteries at MW-scale for industrial microgrid and renewable energy storage applications.
