This is an exciting opportunity to join the exhibit development team at the California Science Center. The Science Center is an internationally recognized leader in informal science education and a great place to make a difference. Located in the heart of Los Angeles in historic Exposition Park, the Science Center is open to the public 7 days per week, 362 days per year, with free general admission and over 2 million visitors per year. The California Science Center seeks an Analyst IV to fill the role of Senior Exhibit Developer. Under the direction of the Administrator, Science Programs, the Analyst IV, under the working title Senior Exhibit Developer, serves as the California Science Center's principal resource for scientific exhibit content interpretation; provides expert consultation and recommendations to senior leadership, scientific subject matter experts, and cross-functional teams to support accurate, accessible, and effective communication of scientific content. The incumbent leads complex, high-visibility exhibit initiatives requiring analysis and coordination of scientific, educational, accessibility, visitor engagement, operational, and stakeholder considerations; exercises a high degree of independent judgment in resolving complex or novel interpretation issues; and develops and recommends content interpretation standards, methodologies, and best practices to guide exhibit development across multiple projects and divisions.

Special Requirements

The selected candidate will be required to submit to pre-employment hiring clearances which include the following: Department of Justice Livescan fingerprint and medical testing for tuberculosis, within three business days of receipt of a conditional offer of employment.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

* Master's degree from an accredited college or university in science, technology, engineering, museum studies, science communication, education, or a closely related field that supports exhibit development, content interpretation, public engagement, or science communication is preferred.

* Knowledge of current principles, practices, methodologies, and emerging trends in exhibit development, content interpretation, informal learning, visitor experience, and science communication.

* Ability to think creatively, solve complex and unstructured problems, and develop innovative approaches when established practices, standards, or methodologies may not exist.

* Experience interpreting complex scientific, technical, or specialized information; identifying key concepts and themes; and translating that information into accurate, engaging, and accessible content for diverse public audiences.

* Excellent writing skills, including the ability to use plain language, develop compelling narratives, and communicate complex technical or scientific concepts, clearly, accurately, and engagingly.

* Experience using research, visitor studies, evaluation findings, user feedback, and other data to inform exhibit development, project decision-making, and continuous improvement.

* Experience working effectively as part of a cross-functional, multidisciplinary team that may include subject matter experts, scientists, educators, designers, writers, fabricators, artists, contractors, vendors, community partners, and other internal and external stakeholders.

* Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders, build consensus among individuals with differing perspectives and priorities, and establish and maintain productive professional relationships with internal and external partners.

* Ability to communicate clearly, tactfully, and diplomatically; facilitate discussions, present recommendations, resolve issues, and exercise sound judgment when working with management, staff, customers, co-workers, government agency representatives, and the public.

* Ability to speak clearly, confidently, and effectively in front of a group and present complex concepts, project recommendations, and exhibit concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.

List Eligibility – Successfully complete the civil service exam for the classification (see Examination Information section below).

Transfer Eligibility – Must have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable. If in a different classification, you must meet the minimum qualifications (see Minimum Qualifications section and associated links above).

Reinstatement Eligibility – Previously obtained permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable.
