Job Description

The Cook I accurately and efficiently prepares, portions, cooks, and presents a variety of hot and cold food items for multiple meal periods, including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and special or catered events. This role supports consistent food quality, timely service, and a positive dining experience for guests.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, portion, and cook a variety of hot and cold food items according to established recipes and standards.
• Set up, organize, and maintain food preparation and cooking stations for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and special or catered events.
• Follow proper cooking techniques to ensure food is cooked safely, consistently, and to the appropriate temperature and quality.
• Assemble and plate menu items with attention to portion size, presentation, and timing.
• Assist with basic prep work such as chopping, measuring, marinating, and assembling ingredients for daily service.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area by following standard cleaning and sanitation procedures during and after each shift.
• Support special events and catered functions by preparing menu items and ensuring timely execution of dishes.
• Communicate with team members to coordinate food production and ensure efficient service across all meal periods.
• Follow all food safety and hygiene guidelines to maintain a safe and compliant kitchen environment.

Essential Skills

• Proven ability to cook and prepare a variety of hot and cold food items.
• Experience with basic food preparation, including chopping, measuring, and assembling ingredients.
• Ability to accurately follow recipes, portion guidelines, and presentation standards.
• Strong attention to detail in cooking, portioning, and plating food.
• Capability to work efficiently across multiple meal periods such as breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
• Ability to support preparation and execution for special and catered events.
• Understanding of basic kitchen safety, cleanliness, and sanitation practices.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced kitchen environment while maintaining quality and consistency.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working in a professional kitchen or food service environment.
• Familiarity with handling multiple menu items and cooking methods.
• Strong teamwork and communication skills to coordinate with other kitchen staff.
• Flexibility to assist with various kitchen tasks as needed, including prep and line work.

Work Environment

This position operates in a busy kitchen environment that supports breakfast, lunch, dinner. You can expect to work around hot equipment, cold storage areas, and standard kitchen tools and appliances. The role involves standing for extended periods, working at a steady pace, and coordinating with other kitchen staff during peak service times. A professional kitchen dress code, including appropriate footwear and attire suitable for a food preparation environment, is required to maintain safety and hygiene standards.

This is a Contract position based out of DeKalb, IL.

The pay range for this position is $19.57 - $19.57/hr.
