Job Summary and Qualifications POSITION SUMMARY: The Registered Dietitian provides medical nutrition therapy to inpatients and/or outpatients via nutrition screenings, assessments, consultations and counseling sessions. The Registered Dietitian is responsible for nutritional management and care of patients according to physician diagnoses. Prepares appropriate documentation and follow-up for same. Responsibilities will include performance improvement and assisting in department, if needed. Reviews the interdisciplinary screening process and assigns a priority level of risk for patients. ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Provide medical nutrition therapy services in an inpatient setting.- Screens patients to ascertain nutritional need and documents in patient chart accordingly.
- Provides nutrition assessment and consultations, with appropriate documentation within designated time frames.
- Assesses patient's nutritional status according to established standards. Obtains necessary information from the medical record to determine patient's nutritional status.
- Develops nutritional care plan for patients of any age including neonate, child, adolescent, geriatric, and terminally ill patients.
- Develops nutritional care plans based on the cultural orientation of the patient.
- Evaluates the results of nutritional intervention on the patient's nutritional status to determine the need to revise the nutritional plan of care.
- Provides follow-up assessments and documentation within designated timeframes to ensure medical nutrition therapy outcomes are achieved.
- Assesses patients receiving tube feedings and PPN/TPN for adequacy of nutrition support. Provides recommendations to physicians and communicates patient's nutritional intervention status by consulting with the physicians when appropriate.
- Provides follow-up assessments and documentation on alternate feeding to ensure medical nutrition therapy outcomes are achieved.
- Interacts professionally with patient and family. Provides nutritional teaching and counseling to patient and family in making desired changes in eating habits.
- Assists in orienting and training new employees to the department.
- Documentation meets standards and policies.
- Able to assess and counsel outpatient's (renal transplant and diabetes center) per department nutrition policies and procedures.
- Participate in department required tray assessments, test trays, and patient visitations.
- Assist in department meetings to train staff on diets.
- Assists patients having difficulties with nutrition intake by recommending supplementation or mechanical alterations to food in order to enhance intake.
- Provides outpatient medical nutrition therapy as needed.
- Assists in Dietitian coverage for vacation, illnesses and as needed.
- Participates in Center of Excellence Diabetes Meetings.

- Attends departmental in-service and mandatory education.
- Demonstrates understanding of hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
- Assists clinical nutrition supervisor with Process Improvement activities as needed.
- Is aware of opportunities for improving performance and makes suggestions to improve operations.
- Monitors and compiles data for performance improvement tasks. Participates on Process Improvement teams as needed.
- Channels concerns appropriately, deals with conflict appropriately and privately.

- Attends mandatory education to refresh knowledge in preventing the spread of infections.
- Performs duties in a safe, functional and effective manner that reduces hazards and risks, prevents accidents and injuries and maintains safe conditions by adhering to established safety standards for body mechanics, electrical biohazard, utilities and emergency preparedness plan.
- Understands and adheres to emergency codes and procedures: able to describe responsibilities for each code as well as evacuation route and department meeting area.
- Is competent and responsible in following safety & security polices of the hospital.
- Utilizes equipment in safe, effective manner. • Is knowledgeable of the location and contents of the MSDS manual.
7. Adheres and upholds all service behaviors as listed in the ICARE value commitment and other departmental initiatives.
8. Performs other duties as assigned:
- Appropriately access secured rooms with locked medication storage containers in order to perform assigned job function, which does not include management of medications
Preferred: Minimum one year of clinical nutrition experience in an acute care hospital setting. Previous hospital inpatient and outpatient experience with emphasis on diabetes, cardiac, ICU, and geriatric experiences. Computer skills with Meditech electronic charting.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES: Required: Registered Dietitian or eligible with the Commission on Dietetic Registration. Must obtain Licensed Dietitian status with the Texas State Board of Examiners of Dietitians within 90 days of initial employment.
