Firefighter
Job Summary
Under general direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, performs fire suppression, station maintenance, and fire prevention duties. Operates in a team environment, responding to and assisting with a variety of emergency and non-emergency situations including structures, automobiles, wild land fires, and medical emergencies. Performs routine commercial pre-fire planning. Conducts daily emergency equipment inspections and performs maintenance. Performs routine station maintenance duties including sweeping, mopping, cutting grass, and laundry.
Essential Functions
Perform Fire Suppression: Maintain a state of constant readiness to respond to all fire and medical emergency situations through preparedness training (physical, education, equipment maintenance, etc.). Perform emergency duties while operating within the Fire Department Incident Command System. Under supervision, perform activities necessary to ensure life safety, fire control, and property conservation including, but not limited to, fire attack and extinguishment, protection of evidence of fire cause, extricating victims from vehicles, providing basic life support, assisting Technical Rescue Teams and Hazardous Materials Incident Response Teams. 60%
Conduct Fire Prevention Activities: Conduct routine inspections (Fire prevention and hydrants). Assist with public fire safety education programs. Participate in training programs as needed or required by Fire Department policy in conjunction with the Fire Prevention Division. 30%
Perform Station and Equipment Inspection and Maintenance: Perform routine station maintenance duties, including sweeping, mopping, cutting grass, laundry, and various other duties. Conduct and document a thorough inspection of the equipment on a daily basis as per department and State regulations to ensure operational readiness. 10%
Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent. International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board Firefighter II certification meeting National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Firefighter II standards. Must have or obtain National Registry and South Carolina Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification as an EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic within one (1) year of employment and maintain certification. Must have or obtain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification within one (1) year of employment and maintain certification.
Preferred Qualifications
National Registry and South Carolina Emergency Medical Technician (EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic) certification and/or experience. Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License.
Performance Requirements
Knowledge of: Inspection procedures of fire prevention measures, hydrants, occupancy pre-fire plans, and fire and life safety occupancy inspections. Handling emergency and non-emergency situations as various situations arise. Maintenance of emergency equipment including, but not limited to medical equipment, fire suppression equipment, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), radio communication equipment, and firefighting personal protective equipment. Department policies and procedures.

Obtain and maintain all certifications required to perform job duties. Conduct routine inspections (fire prevention and hydrants), assist with Public Fire Safety Education programs, and participate in training programs. Perform routine station maintenance duties including sweeping, mopping, cutting grass, laundry, and various other duties. Read papers, manuals, journals, and Department policies and procedures. Make mathematical calculations and draw logical conclusions. Write reports, prepare business letters, summarize meeting minutes, and compose emails in a clear and professional manner. Operate fire apparatus equipment (hoses, nozzles, ladders, etc.), technical rescue equipment (ropes, extrication equipment, etc.), station maintenance equipment, Breathing Air System (BAS) fill station, mobile cascade, pumper, quint, mobile command post, fire safety house, first responder medical equipment, ventilation equipment, and/or hazardous materials response equipment. Operate general office equipment to include scanner, printer, copier, telephone, and computer with Microsoft Office Suite. Utilize specialized software and systems to include time management system, public safety record management system, and other software used by the Fire Department.
Working Conditions
Primary Work Location: Indoors/Outdoors. Protective Equipment Required: SCBA, turn out gear (coat, pants, boots), gloves, helmet, safety glasses, flash hood, steel toe shoes, hearing protection, Body Substance Isolation equipment, and personal rescue equipment; may include technical rescue and/or hazardous materials response equipment. Environmental/Health and Safety Factors: Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Frequent exposure to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards. Frequent exposure to mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, fire hazards, explosives, communicable diseases, and physical danger or abuse. Physical Demands: Continuously requires standing, sitting, walking, carrying, lifting, reaching, pushing/pulling, kneeling, crouching and stooping, crawling, bending, twisting, climbing, balancing, handling/grasping, fine dexterity, vision, hearing, talking, and foot controls. Heavy strength demands include exerting 50-100 pounds occasionally, 20-50 pounds frequently, or from 10 up to 20 pounds constantly. Mental Demands: Frequently requires time pressures, emergency situations, frequent change of tasks, irregular schedule/overtime, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, working closely with others as part of a team, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment.
