Survey Superintendent

JOB PURPOSE The Survey Superintendent is responsible for managing all construction survey and layout operations for assigned projects. The position establishes project control, manages field survey crews, and ensures accurate layout of structural, architectural, and MEP systems. This role integrates survey operations with Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) workflows including model-based layout and laser scanning verification. The Survey Superintendent collaborates with project managers, superintendents, VDC staff, and trade partners to ensure dimensional accuracy throughout construction. REPORTS TO Reports to General Superintendent or VDC Director Directly supervises survey crew chiefs, layout technicians, and scanning technicians LOCATION Primarily Jobsite Ability to travel between the jobsite and Regional Office and other occasional business-related travel. QUALIFICATIONS AND TECHNICAL SKILLS Required Qualifications Minimum of 10 years of construction survey or layout experience. Minimum of 5 years leading survey crews on commercial construction projects. Experience with model-based layout and digital construction workflows. Proficiency with robotic total stations, GNSS/GPS systems, and survey data collectors. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and BIM models. Preferred Qualifications Experience on healthcare, higher education, or large commercial construction projects. Experience integrating survey operations with VDC or BIM coordination workflows. Familiarity with construction software including Revit, Navisworks, and Revizto. Experience with laser scanning and reality capture technologies. Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license preferred but not required. RESPONSIBILITIES Survey Control & Project Setup Establish primary and secondary project control networks. Verify benchmarks, coordinate systems, and survey control against contract documents and civil survey data. Develop project-specific survey execution plans including layout sequencing and control verification. Monitor and protect survey control points throughout the construction process. Construction Layout Manage layout operations for building components including foundations, structural elements, and equipment pads. Perform layout of building gridlines, column lines, anchor bolts, embeds, and penetrations. Coordinate layout priorities with project superintendents and trade partners. Verify layout accuracy prior to major installations. Model-Based Layout Integration Coordinate with the VDC team to extract layout points from BIM models. Implement model-based layout workflows utilizing digital point files. Ensure field crews use coordinated BIM models for layout operations. Assist with model validation prior to layout activities. Laser Scanning & Quality Verification Implement laser scanning and reality capture processes to verify installed construction. Compare scan data with BIM models to identify dimensional deviations. Coordinate scanning activities with VDC teams for model verification and documentation. Support development of as-built models and verification reports. Supervise survey crew chiefs, layout technicians, and scanning personnel. Coordinate daily survey operations and field assignments. Provide training and mentorship for survey staff. Ensure all survey activities comply with company safety standards. Manage survey equipment including robotic total stations, GNSS systems, and laser scanners. Ensure calibration, maintenance, and proper use of all survey equipment. Evaluate emerging survey technologies that improve field productivity. Support integration of digital layout systems and field data collection tools. Coordination with Project Teams Work with project managers and superintendents to coordinate layout schedules. Assist trade partners with layout and dimensional verification when required. Identify and communicate potential dimensional conflicts during construction. Documentation & Reporting Maintain accurate records of survey control networks and layout activities. Document field verification and survey checks. Provide layout documentation and reports to project teams. Support project closeout documentation including as-built survey records. #J-18808-Ljbffr
