About the Role Principal, Advocacy — leading Advocacy activities across a multi‑state region, representing Ryan’s interests and those of its clients at all levels of government. The role is equivalent to an Equity Partner in public accounting and is based in a major city in the Midwest or Southwest (Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Florida, Louisiana, Nashville, TN, Atlanta, GA). Key Responsibilities Develop and execute short‑ and long‑term advocacy strategies aligned with business priorities. Establish positive working relationships with federal, state and local officials and their constituencies. Lead interdepartmental teams of subject‑matter experts to identify and solve opportunities and issues proactively. Manage a team of service‑delivery advocates, attorneys and lobbyists, and collaborate with strategic third‑party groups. Resolve client cases and issues expeditiously, ensuring benefits for both client and firm. Review and enact policy, regulatory and legislative changes that favor the organization’s goals. Consult with senior leadership to set agendas in state agencies and legislative sessions. Drive innovative taxpayer services and maintain Ryan’s reputation for excellence. Elevate and manage the political profile with key officials, providing political‑giving recommendations. Develop timely case and issue status reports, success factors, and ongoing strategic communications to stakeholders and leadership. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree, or postgraduate degree in law, government or public policy (law preferred). Juris Doctor (J.D.) required. Master’s degree, CPA or MPA preferred. 10+ years of experience in tax public policy and/or negotiation in a corporate or professional services environment. Subject‑matter expertise in tax recovery and minimization services with a track record of excellent service delivery. Proven knowledge of federal and state tax laws and government affairs. Essential Skills Strong relationships with decision makers in regulatory agencies and state legislatures. Analytical skills for interpreting tax policies and recommending strategic actions. Exceptional written and verbal communication, with the ability to present to small groups and large audiences. Effective negotiation skills and business acumen in tax matters. Experience keeping campaigns active with stakeholders and lobbyists, driving positive outcomes. Detail‑oriented written communication, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple projects. Adaptability to changing priorities in a dynamic environment. Professional demeanor that builds trust and confidence in tax matters. Ability to manage outside vendors (e.g., lobby groups). Computer Skills Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, PowerBI and Internet research. Benefits Hybrid work options.
