Role Overview: As a Highway Technician, you will work on Indiana highways and interstates performing general maintenance to keep roads safe and clean. Duties include trash pickup, pothole filling, drainage system maintenance, snow plowing, and assisting with traffic control, especially during emergency road closures. This entry-level position offers opportunities for career advancement. The role requires mandatory overtime for emergencies, including winter. This position typically starts at $20.00 per hour, with salary potentially adjusted based on education and experience. CDL Positions: Candidates with a current CDL will earn an additional $1 per hour. Those without a CDL will have 90 days to obtain one, with training provided by INDOT, and will then earn an additional $1 per hour upon certification. Location: This position is located in the INDOT Monroe Unit. A Day in the Life: The essential duties include: Complying with all INDOT safety policies and procedures. Operating highway maintenance and traffic equipment. Loading and moving supplies and materials. Performing winter operations such as snow and ice removal. Engaging in emergency response activities like traffic control and lane closures. Conducting inspections and routine equipment maintenance. Additional duties depending on the assignment: Traffic Inventory Specialist Maintaining, repairing, and installing traffic signs and pavement markings. Receiving, inspecting, and recording new materials and equipment. Maintaining inventory and operating computerized control systems. Attending worksite(s) as scheduled. This job description is not exhaustive; duties may change as needed. What You'll Need for Success: Requirements include: Valid CDL or ability to obtain within 90 days. Passing a drug test. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Physical ability for activities like lifting, dragging, standing, and walking. Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions. Operation of specialized traffic equipment. Ability to follow instructions and work in a team. Additional requirements may include: Knowledge of inventory control and computer systems. Understanding of bookkeeping procedures. Ability to perform essential functions with accommodations if needed. Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports: This role may include supervisory duties depending on agency needs.
