About the Role Every employer must pay and file taxes correctly and on time. At Gusto, our Tax Payments & Filings team owns that promise for more than 500,000 businesses and millions of employees, moving billions of dollars to federal, state, and local agencies. You’ll build tooling, automation, and AI‑enabled systems that keep Gusto ahead of constant regulatory change while working closely with Operations, Compliance, and engineering. About the Team Ownership: Own the investment strategy for how Gusto gains leverage over tax compliance, decide bets, and set long‑term direction. North Star: Compliance that scales faster than Gusto grows—every customer’s taxes handled correctly and on time. Collaborate: Partner across Engineering, Design, Operations, Compliance, Legal, and CX to find friction, validate solutions, and build alignment. Make it happen. Build, prototype, and ship scalable solutions faster than rules change, turning tax complexity into systems that just work. Qualifications 5+ years of hands‑on product management experience, including ownership of internal‑facing platforms, tooling, or operational systems. Track record of driving leverage by building automation, tooling, or system improvements that removed real work. Strong technical fluency and excellent partnership with engineering, comfortable operating in complex codebases. Experience in a compliance‑driven or highly regulated domain (financial services, banking, insurance, tax, healthcare, or benefits). Hands‑on experience with AI and automation. Data‑driven mindset to find high‑leverage opportunities, set goals, and measure impact. Exceptional cross‑functional partner, especially with Operations, Compliance, and engineering. Ability to bring structure to ambiguity: define direction, sequence work, make deliberate prioritization tradeoffs based on clear frameworks. Compensation Our cash compensation amount for this role is $152,000 / yr to $190,000 / yr in Denver & most major metro locations, and $184,000 / yr to $230,000 / yr for San Francisco, Seattle & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above. Location & Remote Policy We have offices in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees based in those locations are expected to work from the office on designated days approximately two to three days per week. The same expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto’s subsidiary, whose office is in Scottsdale. For hybrid or fully remote employees, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required on non‑office days.
