ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Teaches using evidence-based curriculum through an evidence-based instructional model. Plans and prepares for individual and small group instruction using data and IEP goals to drive groupings. Creates a classroom culture that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students by building rapport with students, parents, service providers, and other teachers. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect student, equipment, materials, and facilities. Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved. Analyzes data including screening instruments, evaluation results, and observation records to develop an appropriate Individual Education Plan (IEP) for identified students with disabilities. Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner. Demonstrates a working knowledge of current legislation, regulations, policies, and ethical issues related to the provision of educational services, including least restrictive environment (LRE), due process, assessment, transition, supplemental services and supports, specialized health care and assistive technology for students with disabilities. Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required. Evaluates pupils’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports. Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior. Utilizes strong organizational skills and flexibility to establish and maintain appropriate schedules for providing direct services and documentation, consultation, and professional collaboration. Writes, prepares, and leads IEP meetings for students with professionalism and in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Attends department meetings and trainings as required. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations. Is available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day. Performs other duties as may be assigned. JOB SPECIFICATIONS EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree in special education. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Valid South Carolina teaching certificate with appropriate Special Education area for position. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Oversees the work of assigned instructional aides and volunteers. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret state and federal government regulations and to effectively present information and respond to questions from teachers, parents, and school personnel in both spoken and written language. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts in problem-solving and financial management; add, subtract, multiply, and divide in units of measurement, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; work with probability and statistical inference and display and interpret data. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; problem-solve, review and interpret data; interpret and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form; solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; analyze information and use logic to address work related issues and problems; quickly assess employee, departmental, and administrative needs and provide timely feedback. OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to apply knowledge of laws and regulations, interpret and utilize assessment data, perform duties with awareness of district requirements and Board of Education policies; apply current research and theory to instructional program; plan and implement lessons; establish and maintain effective working relationships; speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication; proficiency with Microsoft applications such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; perform duties with high level of detail and accuracy; self-monitor and manage multiple tasks individually and with group. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Frequently sit, talk or hear, occasionally stand or walk, sometimes reach with hands and arms, sometimes tolerate repetitive motions such as typing. Interact with public and staff. Vision required: close vision enough to see; may occasionally lift 25 pounds. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Noise level varies; office: quiet; meetings moderate; building visits potentially loud. TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 190 Days. EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated annually according to Board Policy.
