The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC protects America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same. CDC increases the health security of our nation. As the nation’s health protection agency, CDC saves lives and protects people from health threats. To accomplish its mission, CDC conducts important science and provides health information that protects our nation against expensive and dangerous health threats, and responds when these arise. The NCCDPHP's Division Of Cancer Prevention And Control (DCPC) Works With Partners To Address Preventable Cancers, Find Cancer Early, And Improve Outcomes For Cancer Survivors. The Comprehensive Cancer Control Branch (CCCB) Supports National, State, Tribal, And Territorial Cancer Control Initiatives Through Program Funding, Program Evaluation, Science Translation, Technical Assistance, Training And Partnership Development. For More Information, Visit Research Project This fellowship provides a doctorate-level trainee with an immersive, practice-focused experience in population-based cancer prevention and control programs, combining applied learning with sustained mentorship from senior scientists and public health advisors within the DCPC Comprehensive Cancer Control Branch (CCCB). Activities Include Participating in research studies to inform implementation of evidence-based interventions addressing risk factors for preventable cancers, early detection and treatment, survivorship, and improving outcomes for cancer survivors. Collecting and analyzing data, collaborating with public health professionals, and disseminating findings through peer-reviewed scientific publications and presentations. Gaining experience preparing public health practice technical packages for comprehensive cancer control programs. Participating in professional development activities focused on science communication including peer-reviewed manuscripts and oral presentations, stakeholder engagement, and translation of evidence into public health practice. This educational opportunity is designed to complement your academic background and foster growth in areas aligned with CDC’s mission. You will not supervise staff, manage budgets, or act as a federal representative. Project assignments are appropriate for an education and training program and do not involve employment-related responsibilities. Learning Objectives Gain experience applying implementation science frameworks to design and implement research studies and evaluation projects. Participate in research to inform implementation of evidence-based interventions for cancer prevention and control. Disseminate research findings through scientific publications and presentations. Develop skills in science communication, stakeholder engagement, and translation of evidence into public health practice. Anticipated Appointment Start Date September 13, 2026. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors. Appointment Length The appointment will initially be for 1 year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds. Level of Participation The appointment is full time. Participant Stipend Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate. Citizenship Requirements This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only. ORISE Information This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. Qualifications The qualified candidate should have received a doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within the past five years. Preferred Skills Educational training or professional experience in the following areas is helpful: behavioral and social science theories, evidence based public health interventions, population based public health practice, implementation and evaluation science, program evaluation, mixed methods research and evaluation, applied prevention research, systematic literature reviews, data analysis, data interpretation and visualization, scientific writing, and scientific communication, statistical programming and analysis using software such as SAS, SUDAAN, and R.
