Description: The facility has 637 licensed beds with a Level 1 Trauma designation. It is a teaching hospital recognized as a chest pain center and stroke center. The Emergency Department has 61 beds plus surge capacity. Census typically exceeds 61 patients. The patient types commonly encountered include chest pain, strokes, diabetes, abdominal pain, motor vehicle collisions, hypertension, stabbings, and mental health issues. Patient ratios are generally RN: 1:4 depending on assigned zone. LPN ratios are 1:4 when applicable. CNA support includes 4-6 techs per shift to assist with various tasks such as vital sign checks, glucose monitoring, and patient mobility. The department also has receptionists, charge nurses, and phlebotomy services available. Nurse-driven care includes administration of drips for heparin, insulin, Cardene, dopamine, epinephrine, fentanyl, propofol, and Levophed. Required skills focus on emergency room nursing and managing critical situations. Support services are available 24/7, including respiratory therapy, hospitalists, and intensivists. Telemetry monitoring is centralized in the ER. The technology used includes EMR with 6 months of experience required, IV pumps, and various other monitoring equipment. The facility operates with a team-oriented culture. The unit thrives on collaboration, managing a busy environment effectively. Floating may occur within the ER, with potential to another facility location, depending on needs.
