Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: ICU Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Third Shift Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Recent ICU experience, ideally in a cardiac or high-acuity surgical ICU setting License: Active, unrestricted RN license in the applicable state Certifications: BLS, ACLS Must-Have: Hands-on CRRT and IABP experience. Direct management experience with continuous renal replacement therapy and intra-aortic balloon pump. Description: The RN implements professional nursing practice centered on the patient as a whole person. The role focuses on the creation of a caring environment aimed at healing and wellness. Nursing practices are based on evidence and current research. Clinical decision-making incorporates all phases of the nursing process, critical thinking, and creativity. Nursing excellence is promoted through helping relationships among nursing staff and across other disciplines. Responsibilities include assessment of patient needs. The RN performs and documents comprehensive assessments according to established scope of practice. Consideration of the patient’s culture, age, and developmental level is essential. Identifying patient risk factors and presenting complaints is crucial. Collecting objective and subjective data is part of the role. Verifying initial admission assessments, if obtained by others, is necessary. The RN develops a prioritized problem list based on input from the team as appropriate. Designing actions and interventions relevant to the patient’s culture and age is required. Desired outcomes are determined in coordination with patients and families. Patient care therapies and procedures must be fully implemented as per established guidelines. The RN explains procedures and treatments to patients and families. Actions to alleviate patient stress and discomfort should be initiated promptly. Recognizing and responding to changes in patient condition is vital. Ongoing assessment and documentation of responses are essential. Task delegation and oversight of team members’ performance are part of the responsibilities. Monitoring the accuracy and completeness of delegated patient care is required. Identifying and addressing educational needs of patients according to their level of comprehension is necessary. Facilitating the discharge process by executing orders timely is part of the role. The RN provides input into patient-nurse assignments based on staffing and patient acuity. Active participation in unit-based activities in support of organizational values is expected. Promoting a positive group dynamic and healing environment through words and actions is important. Assuring nursing excellence in accordance with accepted standards and evidence-based practices is essential. Participation in quality improvement activities and core measures is required. A holistic perspective regarding patient care is necessary. Skills required include accepting responsibility for actions and meeting deadlines. Effective communication, both verbal and written, is essential. Collaboration with co-workers and valuing differences is required. A warm and professional greeting to all customers to promote satisfaction is necessary. Basic knowledge of computer systems and applications is expected. The ability to assess age-specific patient safety issues is essential. Preferred skills include previous nursing experience. Education requirements include an ADN or ASN with a preference for a BSN.
