Sheriff's Records Clerk I
The Riverside County Sheriff's Office is seeking applicants to fill vacancies for the position of Sheriff's Records Clerk I in the Palm Desert and Thermal stations. As a Sheriffs Records Clerk I, the incumbent will perform a wide variety of specialized clerical support services to the Riverside County Sheriff's Office, which may include interacting with incarcerated persons, criminal database verification, providing assistance to the public and other branches of law enforcement, and performs other related duties as required. The department is seeking candidates with clerical experience in a law enforcement environment. A bachelor's degree or higher is also desirable. This position will have a 9/80 schedule and may require overtime based on department needs. The Sheriff's Records Clerk I is an entry-level classification and reports to an appropriate supervisory or manager level position. Incumbents are expected to develop independent judgment to perform duties within standardized and established policies. Incumbents will be required to develop an understanding of technical subject matter unique to the work and gather and inspect local, state and federal criminal history; apply penal codes, rules and regulations accordingly. The Sheriff's Records Clerk I is distinguished from the Sheriff's Records Clerk II, which performs specialized support activities requiring knowledge and experience of law enforcement practices, policies and procedures. The Sheriff's Records Clerk I is a natural progression underfill for the Sheriff's Records Clerk II. Incumbents are eligible to promote to the Sheriff's Records Clerk II upon successful completion of their probationary period, which would include a satisfactory performance evaluation and any additional qualification requirements.

Examples of essential duties include compiling data for, summarizing and maintaining a variety of statistical logs, reports, records, lists, and files; performing detailed clerical work matching numbers, verifying names and numbers, filing confidential documents, and reviewing, compiling and matching lists; processing and researching information on individuals to provide security clearances; performing booking, subpoena, restraining order, criminal and traffic citation infractions, felony and misdemeanor warrant, and other criminal record processes; scheduling appointments and court appearances; notifying other agencies of detainers or holds; conducting record searches in a centralized law enforcement data base to assist with criminal and other investigations; providing information and documents to law enforcement agencies, courts and attorneys, in accordance with legal requirements governing release of information; evaluating images on video display screen for diagnostic quality and presence of artifacts; evaluating videotapes and computer-generated information for technical quality; taking corrective action as indicated to ensure image quality.
Minimum qualifications include any combination of education and experience that would provide the knowledge and abilities listed below. Knowledge of basic functions and activities of a law enforcement agency; basic recordkeeping and accounting methods and procedures; computer operating systems; correct English usage, grammar and rules of punctuation and spelling; standard and legal requirements on confidentiality and privacy. Ability to access automated criminal justice information systems to enter, modify and retrieve data into local, state and national computer systems; work in a law enforcement environment; develop a working knowledge of departmental operations, procedures and regulations; understand, interpret and apply departmental policies, procedures, rules, laws, regulations, ordinances, functions, and processes applicable to the management of local, state and federal law enforcement records; handle stressful situations with the public and cope with a variety of individuals who may be hostile, aggressive, irate, uncooperative, and/or emotionally disturbed; maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Must obtain California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS) certification within six months of employment. Must possess sufficient typing skills to complete 35 net words per minute and be able to file both alphabetically and numerically. Prior to appointment, must pass background check, which includes a polygraph.
