About the Pennsylvania Environmental Council:

The Pennsylvania Environmental Council (PEC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that protects and restores natural and built environments through innovation, collaboration, education, and advocacy. PEC partners with the private sector, government, communities, and individuals to improve quality of life throughout Pennsylvania. PEC’s Northeast Office advances outdoor recreation, forest stewardship, landscape conservation, watershed protection, community revitalization, energy and climate solutions, and sustainable economic development.

Position Summary:

The Northeast Regional Director provides strategic leadership, program and grant oversight, partnership development, fundraising support, and staff management in Northeast Pennsylvania. The Director develops and implements environmental, recreation, community development, and grantmaking initiatives that advance PEC’s mission and regional priorities.

This is a hands-on leadership position. The Director actively plans, manages, implements, and completes regional projects; engages partners; manages grants; and supports program delivery. Success requires both strategic thinking and active participation in daily project work.

The Director supervises regional program staff, including the Program Coordinator and Program Manager, and ensures program quality, financial sustainability, and strong stakeholder relationships. This position reports to the Vice President, Northeast Region, and collaborates with statewide program leaders and cross-functional staff.

Primary Responsibilities:

Regional Leadership & Strategy

• Lead the planning, implementation, and evaluation of regional programs.
• Identify partnerships, funding sources, and emerging opportunities that support PEC’s strategic objectives.
• Build relationships with community leaders, elected officials, government agencies, funders, businesses, nonprofits, and stakeholder groups.
• Represent PEC at meetings, conferences, public events, and stakeholder forums.
• Coordinate with statewide teams to align regional and organizational priorities.

Program & Grant Management

• Directly manage regional projects, partnerships, grant deliverables, and program outcomes.
• Ensure programs meet established milestones, budgets, outcomes, and compliance requirements.
• Monitor performance and implement improvements when needed.
• Prepare reports for funders, partners, and PEC leadership.
• Support new initiatives addressing regional environmental and community needs.

Staff Supervision & Team Development

• Supervise the Program Coordinator and Program Manager.
• Provide coaching, mentoring, performance management, and professional development.
• Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team culture.
• Support succession planning and coordinate staff workloads and priorities.

Mini-Grants Program Oversight

• Oversee regional mini-grant programs.
• Ensure grantmaking is equitable, transparent, and compliant with funding requirements.
• Work with the Program Manager to monitor grant performance, finances, and reporting.
• Build relationships with grantees and community partners.
• Identify opportunities to expand the grantee network, funding resources, and partnerships.

Fundraising & Resource Development

• Collaborate with PEC leadership and advancement staff on grant proposals, sponsorships, fundraising, and the cultivation and stewardship of foundation, corporate, government, and individual funders.
• Contribute to regional planning and long-term financial sustainability.

Communications & Public Engagement

• Serve as a spokesperson for PEC’s Northeast Pennsylvania programs and initiatives.
• Deliver presentations to community organizations, boards, government agencies, stakeholders, and the public.
• Support outreach, marketing, and communications that increase PEC’s visibility and community engagement.
• Communicate program accomplishments, challenges, and opportunities to internal and external audiences.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in environmental studies, natural resource management, urban planning, public administration, business, communications, nonprofit management, or a related field.
• Five to seven years of progressively responsible experience in program management, nonprofit leadership, community development, environmental initiatives, or a related field.
• Demonstrated experience managing staff, projects, budgets, and external partnerships.
• Grant administration, fundraising, and stakeholder engagement experience preferred.
• Passion for environmental stewardship, sustainable communities, outdoor recreation, and Pennsylvania’s natural resources.

Compensation:

This is a salaried position with a salary range of $70,000–$80,000, depending on experience. Benefits include medical and prescription coverage; voluntary dental and vision plans; vacation, holidays, and sick leave; a 403(b) retirement plan; life insurance; compensatory time; and flexible scheduling as needed.

Location:

PEC’s Northeast Office is located in Pittston, Pennsylvania. This is a hybrid position requiring three days per week in the office, with remaining days worked remotely. The schedule will be established with the employee’s supervisor and may change based on meetings, events, organizational needs, and job responsibilities.

Travel throughout Northeast Pennsylvania and across the Commonwealth is required. Occasional evening and weekend work may be necessary.
