Job Summary

We are seeking an outgoing, dependable, and safety-focused Shuttle Driver to operate a GEM electric shuttle vehicle in a busy downtown environment.

This is not a fixed-route shuttle position. Drivers will circulate throughout the designated downtown service area, identify potential riders, proactively offer transportation, and take passengers to destinations within the approved operating area.

Because drivers regularly approach and interact with pedestrians, success in this role requires confidence, enthusiasm, strong communication skills, and a genuine interest in meeting and helping people. Drivers are expected to create a welcoming and enjoyable experience that encourages positive feedback and gratuities.

Compensation includes a daily base rate of $120 per day, with the opportunity to earn gratuities. Gratuities may represent a meaningful portion of a driver’s total daily earnings but are not guaranteed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Safely operate a GEM electric shuttle vehicle within the assigned downtown service area.
• Continuously circulate through areas with pedestrian activity rather than following a fixed route.
• Proactively and professionally approach pedestrians, introduce the shuttle service, and offer rides.
• Transport passengers to approved destinations throughout the downtown area.
• Create a friendly, welcoming, and memorable experience for every rider.
• Explain the shuttle service clearly and answer questions about the downtown area when possible.
• Assist passengers with entering and exiting the shuttle when needed.
• Maintain a professional, upbeat, and approachable attitude throughout the shift.
• Follow all traffic laws, company safety procedures, and vehicle operating guidelines.
• Exercise extra caution in areas with heavy pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle traffic.
• Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections and promptly report maintenance or safety concerns.
• Keep the shuttle clean, organized, and presentable throughout the shift.
• Communicate with supervisors and team members regarding passenger demand, operating conditions, special events, or service-area adjustments.
• Immediately report accidents, incidents, hazards, or unsafe conditions.
• Support special events and periods of increased downtown activity.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record.
• Must be comfortable safely operating a low-speed electric vehicle in a pedestrian-heavy downtown environment.
• Must be comfortable approaching unfamiliar people and inviting them to use the shuttle service.
• Strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Friendly, confident, energetic, and professional personality.
• Ability to remain engaged and positive during slower periods.
• Ability to work independently while following established operating boundaries and safety expectations.
• Reliable, punctual, and attentive to detail.
• Previous experience in hospitality, tourism, transportation, promotions, sales, or customer service is preferred but not required.
• Experience operating golf carts, GEM vehicles, or passenger shuttles is a plus.
• Must successfully complete any required background screening and drug testing.

Successful drivers do more than operate the vehicle safely. They actively engage with people downtown, make riders feel comfortable, provide an enjoyable experience, and represent the shuttle service in a positive and professional manner.

This position is best suited for someone who:

• Enjoys starting conversations with new people.
• Is comfortable inviting pedestrians to take a ride.
• Can create a fun and welcoming atmosphere without being overly aggressive.
• Understands that excellent service may lead to gratuities, but that gratuities are voluntary and not guaranteed.
• Remains motivated even when passenger demand or gratuities vary from day to day.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit and drive for extended periods.
• Ability to frequently enter and exit the vehicle.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach.
• Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
• Ability to communicate clearly with passengers, pedestrians, supervisors, and coworkers.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

• Primarily outdoors in an active downtown environment.
• Frequent interaction with pedestrians, visitors, residents, tenants, and guests.
• Regular exposure to vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic.
• Passenger volume and gratuities may vary depending on weather, events, downtown activity, and time of day.
• Evening, weekend, holiday, and special-event availability may be required.
