Transportation Supervisor

The Transportation Supervisor works under the direct supervision of the Director of Transportation and is responsible for monitoring, coordinating, and supporting the daily operations of the Transportation Department. The Transportation Supervisor serves as a key operational leader, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant student transportation services. This position provides day-to-day oversight of transportation staff, assists with problem resolution, and supports the director in implementing department goals, policies, and procedures.

Qualifications

Licensing/Certification: Valid North Carolina Driver's License Education: High school diploma or GED Associate's degree preferred Experience: Five (5) years of experience in transportation administration or a related field.

Essential Functions
  • Conforms with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations regarding school transportation.
  • Works collaboratively with Shop Foreman to meet and maintain all mandatory maintenance schedules for buses and other vehicles.
  • Supervises departmental staff to provide accurate vehicle repair reporting and parts inventory accounting.
  • Supervises the BSIP Operator to ensure that BSIP data is entered accurately and in a timely effective manner
  • Investigate accidents and provides appropriate reporting and documentation.
  • Supervise activity bus scheduling and vehicle inventory manager.
  • Maintain bus mileage, cost, and pupil load records.
  • Supervise and evaluate Transportation Drivers/Transportation Safety Assistants, and Driver Education Instructors
  • Administer an accurate filing system for each vehicle in the fleet and ensure these records coincide with State rules and regulations.
  • Supervises the Drivers Education Program for the district.
  • Performs any additional duties assigned by the Director of Transportation.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the North Carolina school bus transportation program. Knowledge of North Carolina School Law as it pertains to school bus transportation. Ability to gather and evaluate data. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with central office and school staff, parents, and public. Knowledge of principles and practices of Pender County Schools and related software. Knowledge of NC state rules and regulations regarding school bus maintenance and repair. Knowledge of district requisition processes. Knowledge of transportation department forms, logs, invoices, driver's licenses, parts inventory, etc. Provide technical support to school administration concerns regarding transportation systems. Maintain effective working relationships with other people Become familiar with school bus parts and equipment.

Physical Demands

The employee must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. The position requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, work is performed in an office, garage, and field environment. Position requires availability during peak transportation hours and response to after-hours emergencies as needed. May require walking, standing, climbing bus steps, and exposure to varying weather conditions. Exposure to weather conditions, vehicle noise, and mechanical equipment may occur. Frequent interaction with staff, students, parents, and the public.
