Animal Control Officer I Under general supervision of the Chief of Police, oversees and coordinates the activities of the animal control facility, works an assigned shift, enforces City ordinances governing the keeping of animals in the City; impounds, cares for, and disposes of animals, and performs other duties as assigned. Examples of duties include feeding and providing water for animals at the animal control facility, cleaning and maintaining the animal control facility and grounds, ensuring a safe, clean and healthy environment at the animal control facility, responding to calls for service for animal control, patrolling the streets and looking for and picking up stray animals as needed, quarantining dogs and other animals for rabies observation and notifying the Fresno County Health Department and other persons involved, issuing warnings to persons for violations of animal ordinances, keeping records and submitting reports of all impounded animals, dead, diseased or injured animals, dog bite cases, action reports and complaints, investigating animal control cases and acting as the City's resource person on animal control, tracking inventory and ordering supplies for the animal control facility as needed, selling dog licenses and collecting fees, building relationships with rescue organizations and scheduling and coordinating pick-up or delivery of animals, vaccinating animals as needed, euthanizing animals as needed, recruiting, selecting, training and supervising animal control volunteers (Animal Control Officer III), managing animal shelter operations (Animal Control Officer III), and performing other duties as assigned. Typical qualifications include education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade, high school diploma, GED, or equivalent; one (1) year of work experience requiring frequent public contact; some experience in the care and handling of small animals is preferred; possession and maintenance of a valid California Class 'C' Driver's License; must be a U.S. citizen or Legal Resident Alien; pass a background investigation, physical examination including drug test; and successfully complete a one-year probationary period.
