Job Overview Under the direction of the Senior Manager for Climate Equity, the Environmental Justice Specialist (EJ Specialist) will support BCDC’s Environmental Justice and Social Equity policies in permitting and planning and embed equity into agency operations. The role will lead and manage projects related to BCDC’s tribal affairs program, sea level rise adaptation planning, Equity Action Plan implementation, and accessibility improvements, while engaging and communicating with vulnerable communities and stakeholders. Responsibilities Liaise with vulnerable and disadvantaged communities. Lead and manage projects and initiatives related to Environmental Justice and Social Equity policies. Maintain and provide strategic vision for BCDC’s tribal affairs program. Assist with sea level rise adaptation planning to develop equitable regional strategies. Support implementation of BCDC’s Equity Action Plan and improve accessibility for the department. Develop and implement community engagement programs, trainings, outreach and education. Write clear and persuasive documents, present findings, and manage projects. Provide guidance to other staff on environmental justice and social equity issues for permits, plans, and reports. Minimum Requirements Classification: ANALYST III Salary: $6,623.00 – $8,290.00 per month (minimum salary for new to State candidates unless alternate range applies). Position type: 12‑Month Limited Term – Full Time Telework: Telework; hybrid office headquartered in downtown SanFrancisco. Eligibility: Currently in classification, eligible for lateral transfer, reinstatement, list or LEAP eligibility, or SROA/Surplus candidates preferred. Desirable Qualifications The ideal candidate will have extensive community engagement experience with Bay Area environmental justice and social equity issues, a strong record of building trust with community and tribal leaders, and adept facilitation skills. The candidate should possess strong oral and written communication, problem‑solving ability, and an ability to develop programs under minimal supervision. Knowledge of Bay Area communities, California land use, environmental, and justice issues is essential, along with familiarity with coastal and land‑use planning trends. Background in resource conservation, urban or natural resource project design, or related social, natural, or political sciences is desirable. Multilingual candidates fluent in languages commonly spoken in the Bay Area are preferred.
