Surgical Assistant - Mary Immaculate Hospital Experienced Surgical Assistant's are eligible for a $10,000 sign‑on bonus. New Grad Surgical Assistant's are eligible for a $7,500 sign‑on bonus. Job Summary The Surgical Assistant serves in an assistant role in the provision of care to patients undergoing a surgical procedure under the supervision of the provider in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and within the policies, procedures, and guidelines of the organization. This is an entry‑level practitioner focused on learning and growing in this role. Essential Functions Performs surgical hand scrub, gowning, and gloving according to policy; functions as first or second assist on assigned cases; verifies instruments and assists with counts. Protects patient information in accordance with hospital policy and government regulations; participates in unit and hospital efforts to reduce adverse patient care events. Communicates effectively with the circulating nurse regarding missing or malfunctioning instruments and sterility concerns. Assists with OR case preparation and maintains the sterile field. Assists with patient positioning, skin clipping and prepping, Foley catheterization, and draping. Under direct observation may insert secondary trocars, place instruments, use power equipment, inject local anesthetics (excluding Exparel), perform cauterization, manipulate retractors, irrigate wounds, cut suture material, handle hemostats, tie sutures, and assist with drain placement; assists with wound closure and dressing application. Education High school diploma or equivalent (required). Completion of a Surgical Assistant Program (required). Required Licensing & Certifications BLS Basic Life Support – American Heart Association (preferred upon hire). Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) - NBSTSA or NSAA or NCCSA (required). Preferred for Virginia hires before July 1, 2020, and for Cincinnati hires. If employed in Virginia, registration with the Virginia Board of Medicine (required). Experience One year health care experience (preferred). Skills & Abilities Hard/Tech/Clinical Skills: Monitor patient conditions during treatment. Complete specific routine tasks.
