New Business Non-Profit Underwriter

Nonprofit Underwriter Underwrites individual risk for acceptability, pricing, coverage, terms and conditions for nonprofits by developing, analyzing and evaluating information with a high level of authority. Achieves production and loss ratio goals with assigned agents / brokers by reviewing and analyzing claims, loss history, and taking appropriate action on accounts. Exercises a high level of authority and judgment with minimal direction. Fosters positive business relationships with co-workers, agents, and brokers. Responsible for research, development and presentation of new classes of business including market viability, forms development, and manuals. Assists the manager with department strategies and employee coaching and development, and mentors underwriters at all levels. Responsibilities Underwrite and maintain a profitable standing of nonprofit middle market accounts in the assigned territory. Foster positive business relationships with agents of nonprofit organizations such as food banks, homeless shelters, group homes, home health care agencies, religious organizations, and day cares. Support the efforts of the regional underwriting teams in the nonprofit market and travel to offices as required for training or marketing visits. Review individual risks with assigned agents/brokers and either decline or accept business based upon pertinent information related to the underwriting guidelines. Research and develop new classes of business as well as review market trends and competition movement within the nonprofit insurance space. Assess market viability, suggest form wording on endorsements and exclusions, and support rate changes based on global strategy. Analyze exposures to loss, adequate premium charge for exposures, and proper endorsements and exclusions with the highest level of technical expertise and accuracy. Achieve team/individual production and loss ratio goals with assigned agents / brokers using sound underwriting principles. Operate with a forward‑facing mentality to solve complex issues concerning coverage, terms and conditions, etc. Oversee or handle policy maintenance items and other mid‑term requests during the first year of writing an account. Review Loss Control reports and recommendations and collaborate with the agent / broker to ensure loss control compliance. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Education: Undergraduate studies degree preferred. Equivalent work experience will be considered in lieu of a degree. License/Certification/Designation: Completion of general insurance courses such as CPCU, CIC, AU, ARM, CPIW, CWIS, or ASLI is preferred. Experience: A minimum of 2‑5 years of underwriting experience with 1‑2 years of nonprofit underwriting experience. Knowledge: Knowledge of nonprofit underwriting policies, practices and procedures, insurance law and underwriting/marketing principles and techniques. Skills/Competencies: Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, interpersonally with individuals and groups via telephone, tele/video conference, fax, e‑mail and in person. Demonstrates advanced negotiation skills. Ability to manage the line of business assigned, which may include monitoring of aggregates. Ability to analyze highly complex insurance risks to determine acceptability including policy language. Ability to use/learn job related computer software. Ability to handle the most complex accounts. Ability to devise business solutions to complex problems, implement the most appropriate, and monitor the effectiveness. Ability to make decisions on highly complex issues and work with minimal direction. Ability to train and mentor all levels of underwriters, underwriting assistants and interns. Ability to analyze and interpret mathematical, statistical and logical data, and evaluate its reliability and significance. Ability to apply market trends and competitor intelligence to underwriting approach. The expected salary range for this role is $66,900-$85,000.00.
