Summary We offer a $5,000 sign‑on bonus, creditable service for annual leave accrual, a public service loan forgiveness program, an accelerated promotion program (available at select locations), and an employee referral bonus. Shifts and assignments may vary. Employees can be assigned to any shift at any plant within the Chicago District. Responsibilities As a Consumer Safety Inspector, you will: Inspect meat, poultry, and processed egg products in compliance with the Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts. Apply HACCP and SSOP principles to verify plant safety responsibilities. Perform sampling, testing, and statistical analysis to ensure product conformance. Document findings and communicate results through written reports and oral presentations. Maintain effective contacts with internal and external stakeholders regarding food safety standards. Qualifications Applicants must meet all of the following: Specialized experience equivalent to GS‑05 level: at least 52 weeks of hands‑on work in a regulated food environment (e.g., consumer safety inspector, food inspector, or similar role). For GS‑07 level: one year of specialized experience (equivalent to GS‑05) with independent routine duties. For GS‑08 level: one year of specialized experience (equivalent to GS‑07) with familiarity in federal meat and poultry inspection, HACCP, SSOP, and basic statistical methods. For GS‑09 level: one year of specialized experience (equivalent to GS‑08) with additional independent responsibilities such as export refusal recommendations and temporary coverage. Experience may include paid or volunteer work, including National Service programs. Benefits Eligible applicants may receive: $5,000 sign‑on bonus (new appointments only).
