Duties

Help

As a Telecommunications Specialist, you will perform the following duties:

  • Serves as a technical authority with responsibility for advising on the technological feasibility of processes, systems, and equipment utilized in HSI investigative operations.
  • Maintains and reviews state-of-the-art electronic surveillance systems and equipment, working with manufacturers, vendors, and program managers to derive new functional designs that will make the systems and devices more efficient at fulfilling HSI mission requirements.
  • Recommends to program managers changes in program directions, solutions to problems or redirection of effort as required.
  • Recommends processes and systems to improve HSI capabilities in meeting the electronic surveillance needs of investigation.
  • Coordinates technical elements of the agency's technical operations including design and construction of electronic surveillance devices and systems.

  • Probationary Period: This is a full-time permanent position (Career/Career-Conditional appointment). Upon appointment to this position, you may be required to serve a one-year probationary period.
  • Administratively Uncontrollable Overtime (AUO): You will be required to work on an unscheduled basis in excess of the 40-hour work week. You must be readily accessible to perform this unscheduled work.
  • Administratively Uncontrollable Overtime (AUO) continued: To ensure your availability, you will receive extra compensation in the form of Administratively Uncontrollable Overtime.

You qualify for the GS-14 grade level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience at the GS-13 grade level or equivalent performing duties such as:

  • Serving as a subject matter expert (SME) on advising on the technological feasibility of processes, systems, and equipment utilized in criminal investigation operations; AND
  • Experience working with manufacturers, vendors, and program managers to derive new functional designs that will make the surveillance systems and devices more efficient at fulfilling investigation mission requirements; AND
  • Experience planning, developing, designing, coordinating, reviewing and providing expert technical advice on electronic surveillance systems in support of the investigative mission to include, but limited to: tracking, video, audio, telephone or other systems in support of the electronic surveillance program operations.

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
