Jr. Specialist at Bodega Marine Laboratory: Hill Ocean Climate Laboratory

Position Overview Salary range: $26.49 at Step 1. Open date: May 12, 2026 Final date: Dec 31, 2026, 11:59pm Pacific Time Position Description Job is 50% for 6 months at UC Davis' Bodega Marine Laboratory under supervision of Professor Hill. Responsibilities Research (80%) Assist with general laboratory operations: ordering supplies, lab organization, supporting student projects, equipment calibration and maintenance, maintaining a safe laboratory environment; prepare supplies for field sampling, acquire samples, work with student field assistants, develop schedules for shared equipment, manage laboratory safety information and training, inventory and restock lab space. Prepare and analyze water samples for ocean acidification research, including spectrophotometric pH analyses and alkalinity via autotitration; required knowledge of the marine carbonate system. Assist in maintaining ongoing laboratory and field experiments, including fieldwork in Tomales Bay, Bodega Bay and other coastal sites; fieldwork may require cold/wet conditions or early morning hours. Data management: quality control, upload data to public websites, manage shared datasets. Opportunity for independence and leadership in research products: data analysis, interpretation, writing and presenting research to public and scientific audiences. Professional Competence and Activity (15%) Support ongoing research activities for students and staff, including review and editing of proposals, presentation of results at scientific conferences, and providing feedback on manuscripts. Participate in and contribute to an inclusive and accessible working environment, engage with the academic community through lab meetings and research seminars. Opportunities for co-authorship on published manuscripts and conference presentations. University and Public Service (5%) Mentorship of undergraduates in the laboratory. Serve on local departmental or institute committees based on areas of interest. Participate in lab group meetings, department and institute seminars and meetings. Qualifications Basic qualifications B.S. in Marine Science, Ecology, Geology, or a related discipline. Excellent communication skills. Strong organizational skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Preferred qualifications Experience with the marine carbonate system; previous experience analyzing total alkalinity and spectrophotometric pH. Experience with software for data management, image analysis, reporting (Excel, graphing, statistical analysis, PowerPoint). Careful laboratory skills and microscopy experience. Experience with field research. Ability to work well under supervision and with others.
