VETERINARY TECHNICIAN

Position Summary

We are seeking an individual with a minimum of one (1) year experience as a Vet Tech to assist with the medical operations of the Jackson County Animal Shelter. This is a full time position, with a primary schedule of Monday - Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. All benefits ar effective date of hire, including PAID HOLIDAYS! Position Description

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Handles and cares for animals delivered to the shelter, assists in the surgical procedures and performs a variety of other tasks to support shelter operations. Communicates with the shelter attendants regarding medical related issues. Essential functions include but are not limited to:
1. Responsible for animal pre-op and post-op processes including anesthetic calculations, discharge documentation, and entering surgical records into the Chameleon Case Management System. Ensures surgical suite is clean and disinfected including recovery cages.
2. Assists the veterinarian during surgery by preparing and monitoring anesthesia levels during surgery, prepping the animal for post-surgery and determining location for surgery recovery. Serves as a member of the medical and euthanasia team.
3. Discharges surgical cases and provides appropriate discharge documentation.
4. Fills and labels prescriptions and logs controlled substances.
5. Conducts daily medical rounds of population upon arrival and ensures daily medical treatments are performed and records are up to date.
6. Re-vaccinates and/or re-administers medications as per Veterinarian instruction.
7. Performs dental procedures on animals as needed.
8. Coordinates the transfer of animals to rescues and shelters.
9. Works with Administrative Clerk and Attendants to coordinate surgeries for the Community Cat Project and all other shelter surgical schedules, including the Baker College Laboratory Clinicals.
10. Coordinates the Facebook postings of adoptable animals and other advertisement postings.
11. Monitors surgical suite machinery for replacement or repair needs and monitors, orders and stocks medical supplies.

The Employee contribution for the RHS Plan is $900 annually with an employer contribution of $2,050 annually.

REQUIREMENTS:

Associates degree in Veterinary Technology with a minimum one to two years of experience as a Veterinary Technician.

OR

High school diploma with a minimum three to five years' experience as a Veterinary Technician.

Other Requirements: Certified in animal euthanasia. Valid Michigan Driver's License. State of Michigan Licensed Veterinary Technician preferred.
