Assistant Nurse Manager - Critical Care

Summary The Cincinnati VHA Medical Center is seeking a Critical Care Assistant Nurse Manager at the Main Campus. The Assistant Nurse Manager is accountable to and supports the Nurse Manager with duties, responsibility and accountability for the 24/7 operation of the designated unit(s). Will function as a role model, educator, practitioner, and leader to the team. The 2‑page Resume requirement does not apply to this occupational series. For more information refer to Required Documents below. Qualifications English Language Proficiency – in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f); must be proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by either the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) at the time of completion. Graduate of a master’s level bridge program in nursing who completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor’s level degree in Nursing may be appointed as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a state license, the individual may be appointed on a temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005 – Appendix G6). Graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing must possess a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration. Crediting foreign nursing education higher than an associate degree requires formal equivalency validation from a recognized evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements but do not possess the required licensure may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120‑day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case‑by‑case basis). Grade Determinations: The following scope‑education and dimension criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates and, if appropriate, the level within a grade. Dimension requirements (Practice – Veteran/Patient‑Driven Care – Leadership – Professional Development and Evidence‑Based Practice/Research) are detailed for each grade and level within the online assessment: Physical Requirements: The position includes a level of physicality normally associated with advanced practice nurses, such as physical assessment and potentially long periods of walking, standing, sitting, moderate lifting, repeated bending, or kneeling. Employees are expected to employ proper body mechanics during lifting and seek assistance or use mechanical lifts for weights greater than 35 pounds following Safe Patient Handling Guidelines. Requires adequate vision and hearing to perform duties. Responsibilities Accountable for the 24/7 operation of designated unit(s) and support to the Nurse Manager. Provide coverage for other ANMs as needed. Direction and oversight of orientation, training, and development of staff; input into evaluation of individual staff performance. Serve as a role model, educator, practitioner, and leader to the team. Enhance care outcomes by collaborating with the interdisciplinary team to remove barriers and implement evidence‑based programs and processes. Engage in professional organizations to enhance leadership and career growth. Adhere to ethical principles in decision‑making, fostering accountability at personal, organizational, and staff levels. Equip staff with tools for competent care and promote a culture of accountability for high‑quality, cost‑effective outcomes. Promote alliances across the care continuum, building trust through active listening, engagement, and emotional intelligence. Contribute to the development of care delivery models and environmental design, ensuring evidence‑based, accessible, affordable, and equitable patient care. Ensure compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards. Align nursing/clinical objectives with organizational strategic outcomes by participating in strategy planning and execution. Promote a positive workplace aligned with the organization’s vision and mission. Maintain knowledge and ensure compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards, directives, policies, and standard operating procedures. Preferred Qualifications 2 years of Critical Care experience. 2 years of Leadership experience. Supervisor & Schedule Supervisory Controls: Responsible to the assigned rating and approving supervisors; accountable to the Associate Director of Patient Care Services (ADPCS). Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm. Telework: Not available; Virtual: This is not a virtual position.
