Intermediate Care Technician

Summary The Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) Generalist is assigned to the VA Clinic Kalispell for the Montana VA Health Care System. This position serves as an advance technician for outpatient care settings such as primary care, mental health, and specialty clinics. As an ICT Generalist the incumbent may serve in a medical center, community-based outpatient clinic (CBOC), mobile medical unit, or may have virtual/remote assignments. Qualifications To qualify for this position applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement – 06/22/2026. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) – No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: The 0640 series has an Individual Occupational Requirement as follows: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore technician experience is experience that requires application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. You MUST possess at least one year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the Intermediate Care Technician position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS‑6 grade level in the Federal Service. In addition to meeting the English Language Proficiency and Individual Occupational Requirement to qualify at the GS‑7 level applicants must meet at least one of the following requirements: GS 7‑Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS‑06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include – but are not limited to: Experience ordering appropriate diagnostic studies; Experience in obtaining and documenting patient vital signs; Performing interventions based upon patient symptoms and established protocols/standards; Assisting in behavioral/psychiatric situations; Assisting licensed personnel with complex, specialized, and potentially‑life threatening situations. Experience collecting specimens. OR – Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully one (1) year of graduate education or internship directly related to the position at the next lower grade level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. One year of full‑time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full‑time study. If that number cannot be obtained from the school – 18 semester hours will be considered an academic year of graduate study. OR – Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education beyond only education beyond a one‑half year (e.g., 6 months; 9 semester hours) of graduate level education may be used to qualify applicants for the GS‑07 level. As an incidental Operator you are required to possess a valid state‑issued driver’s license. Duties DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: This position is being filled using Direct‑Hire Authority (5 CFR 337.205) for this occupation. Duties include but are not limited to the following tasks: Providing patient education within scope of care or while providing an intervention (i.e. post‑procedural care, splints care, and wound care). Assisting with behavioral/psychiatric situations in an outpatient setting. Including crisis intervention – management of aggressive or suicidal psychiatric patients – and one‑to‑one observations. Performs mental health screenings. Following facility‑national and local pharmacy guidelines for the administration and disposal of medications/immunizations. IM – SC – Oral – Topical – Nebulized medications. If trained may assist with related technical health‑care procedures as deemed competent by supervising physician/training competency. Ensuring all instrumentation is set up properly for scheduled procedures (i.e. skin biopsies, pap smears, etc.). Completes patient screening assessments – obtains vital signs – obtains patient health history – chief complaints – medication history – and identification of health‑related conditions that may impact the patient’s health. Completion of clinical reminders. Documenting actions, interventions, and procedures in patient medical records. Taking and recording vital signs. Intervenes based upon patient symptoms and established protocols/standards of care. Assesses patient status and keeps physician informed of any change or need for additional treatment. Performs ongoing patient care duties in the primary care setting. If trained may complete procedures (e.g., Ear irrigations, 12‑lead EKG, bladder scans, catheterization, wound care). Perform patient care testing and analysis on point‑of‑care instruments (Rapid Strep, Glucose, PT, Basic Urinalysis, Strep, Flu/RSV Panels, HCG, etc.) and ensure all instrumentation is set up properly for scheduled procedures (i.e. skin biopsies, pap smears, etc.). Performing phlebotomy to collect blood samples. Specimen collection and preparation (e.g., collecting and labeling venous blood samples and mucous specimens) – appropriate processing of laboratory specimens. If trained may administer oxygen or basic BLS as deemed appropriate by supervising physician. Work schedule: Monday through Friday – 8 am to 4:30 pm. Compressed/Flexible: Not available.
